Celebrating you specially every year on your birthday was a lot and it's good that you understood your parents when things started getting a little tough and you didn't use that against them.
You matured quite early enough to understand your mom's feeling rather than use it against her.
Yes birthday is special to some people and they can go all crazy about it.
