MENTAL HEALTH: THE HEALTH THAT INFLUENCES EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE.

Did you know? Yeah, I'm talking about the blog title.

If there's a month that is globally recognised as Mental Health Awareness, it doesn't mean that is the only period we should look out for our mental health. In fact, this should be a priority because our mental health influences our entire lives. It's the leading health of our entire well-being.

I take it as a priority to ensure my mental health is in a good state, because that's when I can function better, physically, socially, spiritually, emotionally and focus more for improved productivity.

It feels like it's difficult to keep up, but that's because we occupy ourselves with things that don't matter, not our priority. When pressure sets in, the mind gets occupied even more than physical actions at that moment. The thoughts of:

  • "How can I get these tasks done before deadline?"
  • "I still have a lot to do for the day... will I find time to rest?"

So, handling the things that are purposeful and within our control circle is important to keep things going in a healthy condition.

In an ever-changing world, it's good to keep up, stay focused and achieve a purpose, but not without breaks. In fact, those breaks, I like to call them "healthy distractions" because they are what we need to keep our health in check, for increased growth and productivity in life.

I realised the importance of taking breaks at intervals for some healthy distractions, which makes me whole and lively again, by taking my mind off anything calculative and anything that would remind me of the pending tasks I had.

These healthy distractions are:

  • Taking a walk. When I feel like I have been on my screen for long, I disconnect myself, not minding the work I have undone, because at that point I can't be productive, I could get distracted by other things which steals my time.

    So I take a walk round the compound, look in the sky, take some photos and admire the birds that come around. Also, checking the plants in the garden. This makes me feel good and calm.

  • Listening to music and singing. I relax on the couch, listen to songs that calming and pleasant to my ears.

  • Making good food. This can't be missed. During break, I try to prepare an easy healthy meal to refuel and get prepared to get back to work. While at it, I snack on any fruit that is available and drink enough water.

  • Taking a nap. This is totally refreshing. Whenever I take a nap, I feel revitalized. Even an hour sleep during this time, means a lot and renews my health.

  • Make calls. I call my siblings and parents, chat with them and friends as well for a little catch up.

All these are healthy distractions that put me in check, away from the pressure or worries of the meeting deadline. These are just a few that I practice.
