When Luxury Becomes Overrated #303

We all want to be rich and successful in what we do to a point where we can afford anything we want without blinking or worrying about what it costs. And we all know that with financial freedom comes living the luxurious lifestyle for some set of people, especially those who can't help but make sure their lifestyle, clothing, or accessories speak volumes about what you're capable of. Now it's worth noting that I understand that when you have money in abundance, it's normal for you to want to buy things that'll make your life comfortable; however, if it comes to a kind of luxury I personally feel is completely overrated, then I'll say it's purchasing/gathering a collection of expensive wristwatches. Below I'll state why I think so and other things related to this topic.

To start with, we must come to the understanding that the purpose of watches is primarily to tell the time, aside from the fact that they could also be a show of fashion, but the most important of them all is that regardless of how much a wristwatch costs, they'll all do the same primary purpose, which is to tell the time. So I find it quite ridiculous whenever I see someone who goes to great lengths to purchase expensive wristwatches just to show off their wealth, when at the end of the day, it'll still do the same job as a common wristwatch being sold beside on the road by hawkers.

Surprisingly, most rich people don't think like this; you'll find them running to purchase the latest wristwatches being released by top brands such as Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Latex Philippe, and Richard Millie, and when you look at why these watches are purchased, it's primarily to show their financial capability, social status, and the like. While I understand some people don't think the same way as me, and they'll still be of the opinion that it's a good thing they're doing, still I'm only stating my own take and that if I happen to have financial freedom tomorrow, I won't be walking in the same path.

Understandably I know many purchases this expensive watches because of their beauty, how they're technically impressive, or how well crafted they are. But then beyond that, I also understand that purchasing these wristwatches is one way of preserving or storing valuables, because if they held such money or invested it into a business, they'd be taxed on it, but holding such wristbands helps preserve the money and make it untaxable. While I understand that particular excuse and think it's a wonderful idea, I don't buy into others, especially for those whose main purpose is just to show off their wealth, and that's why I struggle to understand how someone will spend millions on a watch when their primary job is to tell you the time, and obviously both a 1000 naira watch and a million-dollar one will still do the same job, only that it might not have the prestige Rolex and other top brands have.

So in the light of that, if there's something I won't buy even if I can afford it, it's definitely an extremely expensive luxury watch. It's not like I don't appreciate their craftsmanship or their beauty; I actually do, but I just can't think of spending such amounts of money on watches when there are better ways to spend money, and I don't think it'll be ideal for me to wear such watches when there are millions of people going through hunger because they don't have money to afford a decent meal, and yet I'm wearing a wristwatch that can feed millions of people on my wrist. I usually feel the same way when I see wealthy people display their watches in public, and I won't want to make the same mistake.
