You see the movie Maami, a Yoruba word meaning My Mother, is not just an acted role, it is more of a mirror. This movie was produced by Tunde Kelani, a Nigerian producer and movie director, it stars actors like Funke Akindele and the likes, Funke Akindele a very popular actor was the main cast known as Maami and her son Kashimawo, in short Kashi, Maami wasn’t perfect, she didn’t have much, but she had a different kind of heart, a heart that stays, that protects, that provides, a heart that love.
Now, Maami is a poor single mother, who happen to raise her son (Kashimawo) in very difficult circumstances/situations. She's the real definition of a mother, she has a strength which is not the loud type, she sacrificed her all and loved with her whole heart, she doesn't really have a good source of income, she raised Kashi singlehandedly selling petty items in the market, while shielding him from the scars of an absent and dangerous father.
As far as I can recall, Maami was the first movie to make me cry, I have watched movies and felt emotional, or even scared, but Maami literally moved me tears, it made me reflect, I saw in Maami countless women who are raising there kids from nothing to stardom, women who are loving, hopeful and very persistent.
Watching Maami made me think of those women who pray like there's no tomorrow, women who work tirelessly, refusing to succumb to pressures and all, women who don't care to eat as long as their kids are able to, women who wear torn clothes just to be able to afford there children tuition fees, women who smile through pain, women who won't lostle hope, women who are exhausted, uncelebrated and yet unwavering and grateful to God.
Maami also remind me of some parts of my mum I never paid attention to. Those early mornings she would have been up before everyone else, those evenings she would return home exhausted but still cared enough for us, for her family, all those times she gave up things just so I could have things for myself. My mum was never loud about this things, and I never thought much about it, but watching Maami, I could literally see her, a noiseless love yet heavy enough to carry me through.
I connected with this film more because Maami was never painted to be a saint, she had her own flaws too, she wasn't perfect, there are times she cried, there are times she flared up and got angry, there sre times she was there worrying, there are times she was scared too, but even with all of that, she wa ever present, even when life gave her countless reasons not to, she still showed up. To me, that is the kind of womanhood we don’t talk about or celebrate enough, those ones that did all their power to make sure their kids are the head but they themselves never made any headlines.
Also, Maami never let allow her situations define the possibilities of her son, she spoke positive words over him, she spoke greatness over him. She believed in her son's dream, even when it does not look like it... this is same way a lot of dreams as been made to come into reality because someone somewhere chose to believe...even when it does not look like it.
Maami made me see that there's a different kind of strength in those who shape destinies without asking for anything in return, we often/most times idolize certain set of people, like CEOs, activists and the likes, in as much as they deserve their flowers, these people also deserve to be seen too, as they help built legacy as well.
I am not a parent yet, but I very well identify with her heart. And just like Maami, I believe in nurturing, caring and loving while being present and holding others up. Either in the messages I share or the thoughts I post daily on my WhatsApp status, just like what Maami showcased, it always carry these three things hope, healing and love.
I believe the truest form of love can be seen in how much you gave even when you have nothing, cause sometimes I wonder what her life would have looked like if she had been born privileged. Maami left me with one message that....you don’t need to have it all before you can give out something that lasts, you just have to love so deep, believe, be bold and give. We don't need to always run to get the applauses of men and chase loud success, we can build in silence as well, our result will be loud.
Maami as a character wasn't just written to entertain but to awaken. If I ever become half the woman she was, if I ever was able to raise or touch a life with her kind of love, I would definitely consider myself a success and one who has lived a purposeful life. Maami as a film was shot years ago, but even till now, it stays with me.
