I don't have a permanent place for myself yet and unfortunately, that's the most important thing to start up a garden. Over the last 5 years, I have been moving around from one hostel to another while in school and there is not even an opportunity for me to own a garden. About a year ago, after graduation, I still had to go for a year of compulsory service and couldn't even settle for gardening.
When I was still at home, my mom had a garden that I used to help her care for. It was something I loved doing during my free time before I gained admission into the university. But after graduation, I realized the garden had been cleared for a small shop and there was nothing I could do about it.
I do not know what tomorrow looks like, but having a garden is one thing I have always had in mind because of the easy access it gives me to some vegetables and plants at home. I didn't enjoy my mom's garden because it was small, but my grandma's garden had it all.
Vegetables, fruits, and even crops were always available throughout the year. Whenever we wanted to prepare vegetables, we always went to the garden to collect pepper and vegetables. Even when we don't have any money at home, we usually don't have problems with cooking.
My experience with grandma's garden made me want to have something similar but not until I have my own space. I am not talking about a large piece of land, it could be just the corner of my compound where I can access easily.
The journey ahead still looks uncertain because I don't know what's happening next on my list. Moving back home or getting an apartment, and so many other things are on my mind for now, but whichever happens, I intend to own a garden.
When looking for an apartment, it would be somewhere that would accommodate my desire to have a garden. Basil leaf, Curry leaf, pepper, and a few others are things I will love to have. I will have to see my aloe vera blossom too, nobody helps me care for it at home but I have contracted my sibling to ensure it's alive. In the next few years, I hope to have cultivated a decent garden and it would be fun to share the journey here too.
