YOUR BODY DOES NOT RETIRE FROM MOVEMENT - LOH306

For a long time, I used to think exercise was mainly for people who wanted to lose weight, build muscles, or look good in pictures... Whenever someone mentioned working out, my mind immediately went to the gym, heavy weights, running machines, and people sweating like they were preparing for a championship but with time, I have started seeing exercise differently...

Exercise is not only about appearance... It is also about strength, energy, flexibility, confidence and being able to do ordinary things without struggling.. It is about taking care of the body that carries us through life and honestly I do not think there is a specific age for exercising..

Certainly, the way someone exercises may change as they grow older.. A teenager may have the energy for intense sports and demanding workouts.. A young adult may enjoy running, hiking, dancing, or strength training.. Someone who is older may prefer walking, stretching, swimming, or gentle exercises that protect the joints and improve balance but movement should not have an expiry date... I have seen older people who are more active than people half their age. I have also seen young people who spend most of their day sitting down and barely moving... Age matters but it is not the only thing that determines how active someone can be.. things like Health, lifestyle, fitness level, and consistency also matter..

The important thing is to know your body and avoid doing too much simply because you want to copy someone else.. Personally, I enjoy hiking. There is something about walking up a mountain that challenges both the body and the mind... At the beginning, it can feel exciting. After some time, the legs begin to complain, the breathing becomes heavier, and you start wondering why you decided to do this in the first place but then you keep moving...

I believe exercise should not be made unnecessarily complicated... You can start with walking around your neighbourhood..

You can stretch in your room, You can dance while doing housework, You can ride a bicycle, or even swim... Even small movements are better than treating the body like a piece of furniture.

The goal should not always be to achieve a perfect body.. Sometimes, the goal is simply to remain healthy enough to enjoy life.. I also think people should stop using age as an excuse to completely abandon movement. Growing older may mean exercising more carefully, but it does not mean becoming inactive... In fact, staying active can become even more important as we age because it helps maintain strength, balance, mobility, and independence.

At the same time, nobody should feel ashamed for starting late... If someone is forty, fifty, sixty, or older and decides to begin exercising, that should be encouraged.. They do not need to compete with someone who has been training for years. They only need to begin at a level that is safe and realistic for them and for anyone who has not exercised in a long time, starting slowly is not weakness. It is wisdom..

I think the real question is not, “Am I too old to exercise?” The better question is, “What kind of movement is suitable for me at this stage of my life?”

We may not all exercise in the same way, and we may not all have the same strength or ability but we should never believe that exercise belongs only to the young..
