I never really expected that I would fall in love with anything Korean, but somehow, K-drama just found its way into my life and took over. It all started during the COVID lockdown period. You know that time when everybody was just home, nothing to do, nowhere to go, boredom was choking. That was when one of my friends sent me a link to a K-drama titled Crash Landing on You.
At first, I was not really interested. I just felt like, “What am I doing watching Korean people I don’t even understand?” But I still gave it a try. My people, from the first episode, I was hooked. The storyline, the emotion, the acting everything was just too sweet. I found myself watching episode after episode, forgetting to even eat sometimes.
That was how my love for K-drama started.
After that, I started watching more Descendants of the Sun, Goblin, Vincenzo, Business Proposal, and even The Glory, boys before flower. These people really know how to make you feel something. Sometimes I go from laughing to crying within 5 minutes. Their romantic scenes are not like the usual Hollywood style. It’s slow, sweet and full of chemistry. Even their sad scenes touch you deep.
Apart from the stories, I also love how beautiful Korea looks in their dramas. Everything is so clean and neat, their fashion is on point, their food looks so delicious even though I don’t know half of what they are eating. It made me even start checking Korean recipes online. I tried making ramen and kimchi one time. Let’s just say I tried. 😂
One thing I noticed about K-drama is that it makes you see love and life in a different way. It’s not just about romance, there’s always a message. It could be about family, friendship, sacrifice, betrayal, or healing from past trauma. I’ve even picked some Korean words like “Oppa”, “Saranghae”, “Gomawo” without even planning to learn the language. That’s how deep I am into it.
Now, watching K-dramas is part of my self-care routine. After a stressful day, I just plug in my earpiece, lie down and enjoy one or two episodes. Sometimes, I even binge-watch during weekends like no tomorrow.
To be sincere, K-drama came into my life when I needed comfort, and since then it has stayed. It helps me escape from stress and makes me smile even when I don’t feel like it. I may not be Korean, but in my heart, K-drama has found a home
