Why Struggle Keeps Passing From One Generation to Another

Sometimes I sit and think deeply and ask myself, why does life struggle never really end? Why is it that our parents struggled, and now we too are struggling, and somehow our children may face their own battles as well? It feels like a long road that never truly finishes. Growing up, I thought adulthood would bring rest, peace, and answers. But when I got closer to it, I realized life doesn’t stop testing you just because you grow older.

My parents struggled in their own ways. Not always with money alone, but with choices, responsibilities, and fear of the unknown. They worried about feeding the family, raising children right, and being respected in the community. As a child, I didn’t fully see it. I only noticed when their faces looked tired or when they stayed quiet longer than usual. Later in life, I understood that struggle was part of the role they accepted when they became parents.

One thing my father used to say was, “Life will not get easy, but you will get stronger.” At that time, I didn’t like that answer. It sounded unfair. Why should struggle be permanent? But with time, I started seeing the meaning. Every generation faces a different kind of struggle. Our parents fought for survival and stability. Our generation is fighting for direction, purpose, and peace of mind. The struggles change shape, but they don’t disappear.

Parents teach us values hoping we won’t suffer like they did. They push us to school, correct our behavior, warn us about mistakes. Not because they enjoy it, but because they know life outside is not gentle. Even with all their guidance, they know they can’t remove struggle completely. They can only prepare us to face it better.

I’ve learned that struggle passes from one generation to another not because life is cruel, but because growth demands effort. Without struggle, we wouldn’t learn patience. We wouldn’t learn empathy. We wouldn’t learn how to stand when things fall apart. My mother always said, “Hard times build the mind.” I understand her now more than ever.

Life struggles don’t end, but they teach. Each generation carries lessons from the previous one and adds their own experience. Maybe the goal is not to end struggle, but to reduce its weight for the next generation. To teach better, love deeper, and prepare stronger.

Struggle is not failure. It’s proof that life is moving forward. And as long as humans keep hoping, building, and trying, struggle will walk beside us, not to destroy us, but to shape who we become.
