In the Spotlight
We have a breakdown on user retention rate by onboarders in 2024, as analyzed by @spiritsurge here.
In that table, "super retained" means retained by both activity and HP, and the threshold to be considered retained by HP is 100 HP.
You can see the biggest onboarder to Hive in 2024 was @leo.voter with 18,531, but only 599 of them were retained according to the stats (or 3.2%). So, 96.8% were not retained. Similar numbers of above 90% unretained users were realized by most top onboarders.
Maybe we should mention @actifit as having better results with a 10.7% retention rate, of which 2% of users are super retained (meaning they power up too), while 8.6% are only retained by activity. Why 2+8.6 isn't equal to 10.7? Probably because of rounding.
But now let's move to @ocd and OCDB. I know OCD has an Onboarding and Orientation Program, which as we will see, is very effective. Not sure exactly how are users onboarded via OCDB and especially what happens after they get onboarded, but they have very high retention for activity, considering the high number of people joining via this account.
Let's see...
OCD onboarded a lower number of accounts, but those who were onboarded performed really well: 18% super retained, 15.4% retained by HP only, 9.8% retained by activity only. That's a total of 43.2% retention rate. Impressive! 1 in 2 people joining through them in 2024 is not lost yet. I don't think you can find anywhere online such fantastic results!
OCDB, however, is right up there close to 2nd place at the number of total onbordees in 2024. And yet, it has a 22.3% retention rate by activity (much higher than any other onboarder), without excelling at the others.
How do they do that? Is it a good model to follow? Does it scale up? The fact that OCDB had great results for activity at over 23x more onboarded users than OCD, may mean the model could possibly scale.
Marketing / Awareness / Branding / Meetings
Hey! Wanna warm up for Hive Fest in Kuala Lumpur? I know many don't need any warm up, neither metaphorically (they are already pretty excited) nor literally (heat is already high where they live). But here it is!
The team just got together at the Hive Hub Hotel in Guatemala. We had a few short videos already, but looks like the fun (and the work) has just begun and we'll hear a lot more from there in the coming weeks.
@x-rain asked himself and us if targeted Hive communities would be a better destination to push visitors toward. I think it is a must, if we don't want to waste those visits. I think Hivers still subscribe to too many Hive-centric communities instead of topic-related ones. I am guilty of that too.
Haven't written about Venezuela in a while... This seems like an interesting news to share, and a great mentality, we certainly need on Hive.
Governance / Development / Dapps / Education
We have a DHF proposal instrumented by @crimsonclad in the name of @zypto, to fund the integration of HIVE with this full suite of global financial tools.
I'll share this quote:
With the implementation of Hive, Zypto will work to build a decentralized custodial system so that HIVE and HBD can be accepted as a payment method across the entire Zypto product suite including Reloadable Cards, Prepaid Cards, Bill Payments, and much more.
We don't always "know" Hive devs, because they are too busy building and not always have time or desire to present themselves or their work to the community.
@mtyszczak, a long-time Hiver by now, presented himself and his Hive work to the community. He just finished working on the Hive Wallet (the one that will be integrated into Metamask, if approved), but contributed to many other projects and likely will continue to do that. Thank you for doing that!
I talked about the new editor in a separate post. This is the announcement. In the meantime, I discovered a pretty annoying situation which made me switch back to markdown. If you have two links, one after another, and want to insert a regular text between them, you can't because it will be part of one of the links. I mean, you can, but have to add it and unlink it afterwards. And if you add more text, it will be linked too, so you have to unlink that one too. If you look at the markdown generated if you need to do something like this, it's pretty messy... @asgarth
Speaking of PeakD, they ended their ads experiment, without encouraging results.
Michael Garcia (@thecrazygm) explained at some point that creating and sharing some of the tools he does (even if they exist in other forms), is a way for him to learn to code on Hive.
I think he shared two interesting tools this week. One is a "liquidity bot", which allows to sell a token into another if the target price is met, and eventually automatically attempting to add them to a diesel pool (the example was with SWAP.HIVE and SIM).
The second one is a dividend projection tool which can be useful to dividend-based project owners/operators.
@techcoderx created a dashboard helpful for curators and for witnesses.
I took the liberty to create a Firefox extension based on his curation tool. I'll probably make at least one improvement (to store the information locally about the authors recently hovered over, so that the API isn't called repeatedly for the same user) and attempt to create an extension for Chromium tomorrow (don't know yet if there are any significant changes needed since this would be my first Chrome extension too).
If anyone had any doubts, or thought why should the masses come, well... here are some reasons, nine of them.
Games
Fun is good! 😄 We have an Yaba's Pickle card about to be released next week.
Ahonex auction market for Splinterlands cards seems to be catching on and continues to be developed.
Moon end-game condition was met a while ago, but players don't want to let go to Universe 1 just yet, apparently.
For a while, I set my production to zero, thinking Universe 2 was just around the corner. Seeing that won't be the case, and getting bored, I restarted doing some things with my little empire. Looks like my alliance turned into a mercantile one, seeking a new goal after the end game for the players still active.
In the meantime, it seems a State of the Moonion was held recently. With more details, reporting Eco.
Looks like Universe 2 will be seriously different than Universe 1. Multi-accounting will be permitted, so will settling for services provided outside the game (like via payment in other tokens). One thing that will still not be allowed will be pushing "up".
Yeah... It will be a complicated Universe... But I understand the game operators not wanting to play police anymore.
I also heard it'll be another month or so until Universe 2 will begin.
We have more details on Holozing while we wait for gameplay. Yep, keep them coming!
Week in the Crypto World
In the past (and to this day), we had websites offering debit or credit cards with rewards in their own token.
But I don't think we have many options which offer debit/credit cards with BTC rewards.
Apparently, Gemini offered one since 2021. I didn't know that.
Coinbase joins the party with an American Express-based credit card offering up to 4% BTC rewards.
A study by Gemini and Glassnode quoted by different sources says that almost 31% of the BTC supply is currently held by ETFs, publicly-traded companies, or governments, an amount that rose by 924% over the last 10 years.

Outside partnerships like @zypto are very important for us to break out of the silo. Most people on HIVE do not realize that there is a massive divide between them and the normies. I feel like HIVE is like the Linux community. We need to do things that cater to normies even when those things are more expensive. Imagine forcing everyone to use a CLI whenever it is more efficient than a GUI. Instead of learning CLI, most people drop Linux.
Great comparison! I feel the same way, but we started to become more normie-focused, just like Linux did (some distros, at least). We still have our hard core instruments normies won't touch, just like Linux won't touch some distros either.
For ocdb's onboarding strategy, refer to the following post.
https://peakd.com/@acidyo/a-look-at-ocds-onboarding-program
ocd's and ocdb's onboarding numbers aren't the same, the one above is specifically for ocd.
That's a good post to link, even if it refers specifically to OCD. Thanks!
You beat me to it this week :) I was going to mention a couple of those items, but my focus is slightly different anyway.

I was forced to. I had to be somewhere by 3pm so I had to start and finish earlier than usually.
Thanks for the curation!
That zypto stuff doesn't convince me, it's kyc and its limited to just 10 countries for some stuff... Fees don't seem low either, really I don't see the difference with just withdraw to binance and use their card... Kyc for kyc
I could make a difference for those without access to Binance. I have access to Binance, but had an issue with their card - never got it. Didn't bother to see why either...
I have the card from crypto.com, and haven't checked to see which one would be better on fees (I know crypto.com has pretty high fees too, if you consider everything). But crypto.com doesn't list HIVE or HBD, so I'd have to go through other tokens to their card. Funny enough, they have SPS, but with a low liquidity from what I heard.
The retention stuff is interesting. I wasn't expecting InLEO's retention rate to be so low. I guess alot of people tried because of the referral program and the DHF proposal, but they didn't stay long enough to be part of the ecosystem. I do think they did a great job of reaching out to other ecosystems, but I don't know if there was enough things to keep them retained after signing up.
Yeah, they didn't perform so badly compared to the rest. Only a few percent better the ones that are in the <10% retention category, with a few about the same as InLeo.
Obviously, from the examples of OCD and OCDB (and even Actifit, to a lesser degree), these numbers can be improved.
I really liked Zypto's project and their plan to integrate Hive and HBD into their financial system. It's a great step toward real-life adoption of cryptocurrencies.
We surely need more ways to directly use HIVE and especially HBD in the day-to-day life.
