BEYOND THE FACADE, THE TRUTH ABOUT TEACHER RELATIONSHIPS

Source

I will never forget the day I discovered that my school was not the supportive community I thought it was. It happened the very day I was appointed as the Head of Department while my colleague Sifon was not.

We had both started teaching in the school around the same time, navigating the ups and downs of the classroom together. We supported each other, covered when needed, and collaborated on lesson plans as a team. It truly felt like we were in it together.

However, that appointment changed everything. The congratulations from Sifon felt forced, and before long I began hearing rumours that I only got the position because of my supposed connections with the school management. To my shock, I later discovered that it was Sifon himself who was spreading those rumours.

That was the moment I realized that colleagues are not family. It may appear so when you are all working together to support learners, but once power and prestige come into play, true colours begin to manifest.

This does not mean that one should not build relationships with colleagues. However, it is important to be wise and cautious. Teachers will be friendly and supportive, but in the end, most will prioritize their own interests.

Do not be caught off guard thinking everything is about teamwork and camaraderie. Keep your eyes open, set realistic expectations, and maintain clear professional boundaries.

Stay ahead, stay informed, and above all, keep teaching with integrity.
