Why You Need To Do Some Ice-breaking Activities in Your Classroom

Have you ever experienced a boring learning atmosphere? As a teacher, you must understand the mental state of the children in the classroom.
An unpleasant atmosphere will reduce the children's ability to absorb the lessons you give. Therefore, you need to do light activities to restore a more conducive atmosphere.

What are the icebreaking activities ?

An icebreaker is an activity or game designed to welcome attendees and warm up the conversation among participants in a meeting, training class, team building session, or other activity. Any event that requires people to comfortably interact with each other and a facilitator is an opportunity to use an icebreaker.

A class needs warm interaction among the students. A teacher is the facilitator. If the facilitator is not able to create a comfortable environment in the learning activities, the lesson objective can not be achieved.
There are some ice-breaking activities you can practice in your classroom. The activities can be done at the beginning, middle, or end of the session in a meeting.
Ice-breaking activities at the beginning of the meeting aim to warm up students. You can ask funny questions to the students before you start the class. The purpose of your questions is to break the communication barrier between you and your students.

Icebreaking activities in the middle of the meeting will give relaxation to your students. For this session, you need to prepare some activities to entertain your students. You can do outdoor activities in a few minutes. You can also use some tools if necessary.

While icebreaking activities at the end of the session, will remind your children that the meeting is fun. Your students will miss your class. They expect to meet you in the next meeting.

Some icebraking activities that you can practice in your class

  • Funny questions
The sense of humour is different in every country. You can ask funny questions in your mother tongue. The purpose of the questions is to open up conversation between you and your students. Students will feel more comfortable talking to you.
This is a funny question in my country.
" Why does a surgeon cover his mouth and nose with a mask?
Because if the surgeon closes his eyes, he won't be able to see. "
  • Count from one to 20 with "Buzz" for number 4 and it's multiplication.
You can stand in a big circle. Then ask your students to count from the left side. Every number 4 and its multiplication should say " Buzz". You will find a child who is not concentrating will not be able to or forget to say "Buzz". Children will usually laugh when a friend mispronounces a number or "Buzz". Do the counting until the children reach the number 20.
  • Horse whisper
You, as a teacher, divide the class into two groups. Then you whisper the word to the child standing at the front of each group. Then, the child at the forefront of each group whispered the word he heard to the friend behind him. The child at the end of the sequence must pronounce the word correctly.

Those are three ice-breaking activities that you can practice in your class.

That's awesome. As a student, I can totally agree that ice-breaking activities make me more comfortable with the teacher and that I am more inclined to participate in activities.

Thanks, in long hours, students will lose their concentration in learning activities. If we force them to focus on writing, reading or opening up their book, the students will get bored. Ice-breaking activities will give a time for relaxation.
