Red Sonja: A Rough But Fun Fantasy Adventure

As I finally got the chance to watch Red Sonja after hearing about it for long time, and honestly it was an interesting experience movie for me that I was eager to share now. This is not the kind of film I normally go for, but I wanted to see what it had because people kept mentioning it as a sort of cult classic. After watching it, I can say it is not perfect movie, but it has its own charm.

The story is about a woman named Sonja, red head woman who suffer tragedy in the hands of evil soldiers, and later she is chosen to fight back and get revenge for her kingdom. She is a very strong and carry a sword with lot of confidence. The plot is pretty straight forward, about her trying to stop an evil queen who wants to control a powerful magical relic. Honestly, nothing too complex, but that is part of the fun because it just focus on the adventure and the fighting.

What I like most about Red Sonja is the character herself. Even if the acting sometimes look stiff or not too emotional, you can still see the effort of making her a warrior that doesn’t give up. The costumes, the sword fights, the sets – all of them felt very 80s fantasy style, which for me was enjoyable in a simple way. It has that old school charm where you know things are a bit over the top, but you still keep watching.

Now,to mention and say the weak side of the movie is the writing and some of the acting. The lines are not very deep, sometimes even a little funny when maybe it was not suppose to be. Some of the scenes feel slow or drag out too long. If you are looking for serious cinema or something polished, this movie might disappoint.

But according my own experience, I found myself smiling at how bold it was. It not hide its flaws, it just goes with them. If you are a fan of sword and sorcery type of films, you will probably enjoy Red Sonja. It is not for everyone, but it is a piece of fantasy history that deserve a watch at least once.
