I love epic action movies. Sometimes you just need to turn off your brain a bit and immerse yourself to the wonderful scenery of massive explosions and over the top fisticuffs. And so when I learned that the new CineTV contest's theme is about my favorite fighting scene, I had to think it through as I've seen a ton of those throughout my movie watching experience.
I've then decided to go with a movie that really set the bar for me in terms of modern action movies in the 2010s. That action movie is the original 'The Equalizer.'
The Equalizer stars Denzel Washington, a veteran of action films and has done great projects in the past decades. Denzel plays Robert McCall, a home improvement employee who frequents a local diner during the night. He is presented as nonchalant, neat, and methodical, traits that scream ex-special forces. He then meets and befriends Alina, (Chloë Grace Moretz) a young prostitute trafficked by a Russian syndicate. One fateful night, Alina was beaten half to death and was hospitalized.
The Fight Scene
This is where my favorite fight scene comes in. After learning the truth about Alina, Mr. McCall decides to confront the Russians involved. This culminates in a very iconic action sequence:
At first, Robert confronts the mafia boss and tried to bargain for Alina's freedom. I like how he offers $9800. The uneven amount makes me feel like he pooled all his available money to negotiate. As expected, the boss refused and Robert was left with no other recourse but violence. The next sequence was more of a one-sided execution than a fight. His calm composure while calculating his environment shows how experienced he is in killing. He then proceeds to start the timer on his watch while methodically ending the lives of his targets.
That fight/murder scene was also a pivotal moment in the film as it then causes the Russian syndicate to send in their own group of professional hitmen. This forces Robert to root out the entire organization up to its top leader in order to truly liberate Alina from the clutches of the underworld.
As a whole, The Equalizer is included in my personal list of greatest action movies of all time. I think what makes revenge plots very enjoyable is the notion that justice can be served, even if it's just in fiction, especially when there's so much injustice in the real world. Revenge films may be a dime a dozen, but The Equalizer stands out as one of the best in the genre.
