Annihilation when nature rebels against you

Annihilation is one of those films that plays on your nerves and keeps you waiting for an answer, but in the end, it makes you thinks more than it gives you clear answers. The story begins when a strange object resembling an alien crashes into Earth and leaves a mysterious area called "The Shimmer." This area expands, and anyone who enters it never returns.

Our heroine, Lena (Natalie Portman), decides to embark on this adventure herself after her husband was one of those who entered and exited in a strange state, and no one understands what happened inside him. She enters with a team of scientists, and the deeper they delve into the Shimmer, the more they discover that the natural laws we know no longer operate there. Plants, animals, and even humans change in a strange way, as if the entire place is reshaping life in its own way.

Psychological horror or science fiction?

The film isn't horror in the traditional sense but it plays on the sense of tension and fear of the unknown as The creatures within the Shimmer aren't just monsters but strange that are transformations of life itself like a bear that mimics the screams of its victims or plants that take on the form of humans and these scenes are frightening in their own way not because they suddenly appear but because they make you feel like you're witnessing something that goes against the grain of life as you know it.

Annihilation is not just a story of survival, but also about change—about how, when faced with something beyond their understanding, a person can become lost or transformed into something different. The film plays on ideas like evolution, identity, and self-destruction raising more questions than it answers. The ending itself is open ended and leaves room for interpretation which makes the film a mind-bending experience rather than just a fun-to-watch experience.

If you like films that don't give you all the answers on a silver platter and that keep you thinking about them even after the end, Annihilation will be a strange and exciting experience for you.
