Little Women is a gem of a movie. It’s an instant classic.
There’s no other way of saying this, Gerwig’s adaptation of a timeless novel is sensational. It’s just so amazing how these characters are coming to life, all of which, are written beautifully and rich. And add the actors that portrayed their characters wonderfully (not to mention Chalamet is so handsome), Little Women is a marvelous movie experience.
The film tells the story of Jo March in the years after the Civil War. She lives in New York and makes her living as a writer, while her sister Amy studies painting in Paris. Amy has a chance encounter with Theodore, a childhood crush who proposed to Jo but was ultimately rejected. Their oldest sibling, Meg, is married to a schoolteacher, while shy sister Beth develops a devastating illness that brings the family back together.
It might take some time for you to get used to the non-linear storytelling, but there’s so much energy in the film that it fills you up. Character per character, story arc per story arc, everything is just exciting.
Saoirse Ronan is a gift that keeps on giving. I loved her in Brooklyn and she is as radiant enigmatic and engaging as Jo March here in Little Women. It’s the kind of story that you wouldn’t mind going on and on and on because there’s so much life to it. There’s truth in the journey, the pain, and the memories of the March ladies.
Their costumes are perfect, the settings beautifully mounted, and the cinematography gorgeous with different lighting for certain situations & scenes. There isn't a false note in this movie. It is a beautifully realized production with humor, delicacy when needed, and a great deal of emotion, particularly in the 2nd half of the movie. Be prepared to shed a few tears during this movie as I did. But the tears are not forced through some contrivance in the movie; they are genuine, natural emotions for real-life situations where tears are expected and natural.
This is a movie everyone should see and enjoy, Ultimately it is an uplifting, life-affirming movie and perfect viewing during these times.
