Hello, beautiful people! Welcome to my blog. It's a pleasure to have you in this space. Once again, welcome 🤗
The movie Gifted Hands: The Story of Dr Ben Carson, the world famous neurosurgeon is one of those movies that make me feel good and motivated. The movie is a movie that gives one hope and makes you feel as though there's actually nothing impossible for you to achieve once you put your mind to it.
Summary Of The Movie
The movie was released in 2009. The movie started in 1987, when Dr. Ben Carson traveled to Germany to meet the parents (Peter and Augusta Rausch) of a conjoined twins, who wanted him to separate their twins by operating on them, but Dr. Ben Carson told them of the risks involved, which are that they might risk losing one or both of the twins. After explaining the risks to the parents, he agreed to operate on them but spent about 4 months researching on a plan that would increase his chances of having a successful surgery.
The movie is now dated back to 1961, when Ben Carson was still young. He was not doing well in school, and he assumed that it was because he was dumb. Their mom, being worried about her son's performance, cut down their TV time and asked them to learn the multiplication table and also go to the library to study more. After a short period of time, Ben Carson, who was always at the bottom of the class, started doing exceptionally well in his class, to the extent that he won an award in an all white school. After he graduated from high school, he got a scholarship to Yale University, where he studied neurosurgery, and it was also in university that he met his wife, Candy.
My Opinion
I remembered when I first watched this movie, I was so inspired by the academic performance of Ben Carson. Imagine someone who always comes last in class and then has a dramatic shift in his academics because of hard work and determination.
But what inspired me most was how intentional the mom was about their academic performance, despite being an illiterate who doesn't know how to read. I loved how she hid it from her boys and made them believe that it was because she was not with her glasses.
What I loved more was how encouraging she was whenever Ben complained that he couldn't do anything. She made him believe that he could achieve whatever he wanted to because everything he needed was in his brain.
This is one of his mother's quotes I loved. You can do anything anyone else can do; only you can do it better.I loved how positive she was even in challenging times, and even when he became a doctor and was having some hard times, his mom's words came playing back in his head.
This shows how powerful the impact of a mother's words is on her children.
Watching the movie two nights ago made me more intentional about the resolution I made as a mom. While some moms would curse at their kids and blame them for being dumb and a failure, I would be one of those few moms that would tell my kids that they can and will be any and everything they want to be and achieve as far as they put their mind to it. Because no child is really dumb.
My Rating
I will surely rate this movie a 10/10 because I love everything about it, ranging from the cinematography to the powerful performance and inspiring storyline and messages. It's an uplifting and motivating movie.
