Theres that one movie that makes me stare at the screen, I remember almost very scene, I do replay it most times in my head, that movie did something to me, to my soul. I know movies hits us differently, but choosing, huhm, that will be "War Room".
I’m not picking to write about it because it is a christian movie or has effects or is it good graphics, I am picking it because it is raw, it is real, one that resonates with one, one that makes one have a rethink of life and choices.
I had two movies in mind one was God Is African and the other War Room, am going for the latter though. Be you a christian or not, this movie is for you, you will definitely learn something, not just about hoping, praying or having faith but about knowing and fighting for what counts even when it feels like its all crashing.
Elizabeth finds herself in a situation that seems to be hopeless, her marriage is failing, her career going down the drain, and her home is a battlefield. She’s a successful real estate agent with a seemingly perfect life, but underneath, everything is failing, her husband is being unfaithful and distant, also, their daughter is caught in the crossfire, and Elizabeth, she's tired. A lot of us have one time or the other been there too, just that our own story may be different, but still it was a hopeless situation.
There's this old lady, she introduces something to Elizabeth, something she never really considered, she introduced her to fighting her battles on her knees (praying), that's how “war room” came to be, somewhere she kneels to pour out her frustrations, problems, fears, and hopes to God. At first, it seems somehow, how can praying in a closet fix a problem or a marriage that's on the verge of collapsing. But that’s the beauty of it, it’s not about the closet, its about yielding, surrendering and knowing you have no power of your own to fix things. This is not a war that fist or arguments will settle, there's a kind of warfare that can be engaged, and that's prayer.
War room did not paint a perfect picture. It shows real life, it was real. Elizabeth husband didn't just change overnight, even Elizabeth didn't just turn a prayerful person just like that, it takes time, it was a process and a it was a painful one. As I watched the movie, I kept thinking of those times I have tried and wanted to help myself, completely forgetting that sometimes I just have to let go and let God.
The movie is not just about spirituality. You learn how to fight for what’s important without losing self in the process, you come to the understanding that some of this fights are deep and not really about the real people we see, this movie shows how that no one is beyond saving. That’s why I believe everyone should experience this movie at least once. This is not preaching, it is more of holding a mirror up for you to see and be able to confront your own battles.
This movie resonate with every of life situation and not just marriage or relationships.....be it friendships, family, work or personal struggles. There are times we waste our energy fighting, yelling, nagging, shouting, complaining and all, all believing that we are trying to change someone, fix situations and force outcomes, whereas all we really need to do is take a step back and fight differently. This movie will challenge you to think and act differently and to realize that your vulnerability isn’t weakness. Its true strength.
This is not about being rich, poor, American, Nigerian, married, single or whatever, we all go through pains and struggles at some point. We all have something we are either fighting for or fighting against. That’s why I recommend this movie, It’s not just about entertainment, it’s a wake-up call to rethink and handle life’s tough moments differently.
So, if you’re looking for that one movie that everyone should experience at least once, it’s "War Room". Not that it's perfect, but it's real, honest and transforming. It goes beyond just watching, it's honest and deeply transformative. It makes you question how you’re handling your own battles and reminds you that sometimes, theres the need to really fight differently.
