Going Around in Circles? || House of the Dragon Season 2

Even though I’d had it downloaded on my phone the moment all the episodes were out, I couldn’t bring myself to see the series for some reason. That was until I kept being plagued by edits of Daemon Targaryen and I just knew I had to see it. Took me all of two days and every moment was worth it.

House of the Dragon Season 2 (2024)

So, we continue from where we stopped in the first season. In King’s Landing, Aegon has ascended the Iron Throne. Aemond still remains a terror with his dragon, Vhagar. Queen Dowager, Alicent, still believes that she was fulfilling the late King Viserys’ wishes by placing her less-than-worthy son on the throne. Otto Hightower, Alicent’s Dad remains the hand ...for a while. Ser Criston – Alicent’s lover. The people are hungry and tired and constantly curse the names of the royals on the street.

And then we move to Dragonstone where Queen Rhaenyra still mourns the death of her son who was killed by Aemond in his quest for revenge. Daemon feels that time is wasted and charts his own path. The members of Rhaenyra’s council barely heed her mind and voice their displeasures at every opportunity. Rhaenyra returns and attempts to establish order again. Then there is the quest for dragon riders. The impending war is looming ever so near, and the people at Dragonstone know that where Kinglanding stands, they are heavily outnumbered. What does fate have in store for them all?

My Thoughts

I had already seen a review of this film by chance here on Hive and a few snippets from TikTok, so I already knew the war that had been talked about since the first season, did not happen. I’m guessing that this is why I felt rather reluctant to see this particular season because I guessed that it would all be a case of beating around the bush and going around in circles.

Which is what happened. There were many scenes that I felt were quite unnecessary. Okay, maybe I shouldn’t exactly call it unnecessary. But let’s just say we, as an audience, would not have missed out on anything or gained any new information if we had not seen it. At some point, some scenes even felt repetitive. Like surely this matter must have been discussed six scenes ago. Why again?

I’ll come out clean and say a great reason why I was looking forward to this season was because of Daemon Targaryen. I had such an unhealthy crush on this man in season one. My crushes are never the go stalk his Instagram type or anything. But TikTok is super weird. I didn’t have to search anything and yet I was assailed by clips of him from the movie itself and from other places. So, he was pretty much the sole reason for my eagerness to see the film. For some reason, after the first few scenes, his novelty was lost on me. Not holding quite the same appeal as Season One. Probably because I didn’t quite enjoy the way he acted for most of the series.

Anyway, the painful part about this whole thing is that we’ve got to wait at least two more years, at the very least, before another season comes out. I wonder whether the directors do not realize how easy it would be to lose their audience, especially since this is simply a prequel to Game of Thrones. It’s quite devastating to have to wait this long for something that should have been straightforward. Anyway, I did enjoy all the gallivanting. Things do not usually go in the way of the people we like, but I’m trying to trust the process and hope it does not fail me.

It’s funny cause I’ve only seen bits and pieces of Game and Thrones and never fully watched it. But I’ve been locked in on House of the Dragon from day one and so far, so good, it hasn’t been disappointing. To a great extent. Do see this series if you’re yet to.

I think waiting two years for the next season installment is too long a time o.

The graphics look good. The storyline isn't bad, either. But this is not my kind of movie. I'd just recommend it to someone who would love it, that's if she hasn't seen it already. Well written review. Nice one.

I have been seeing this on TV but never watched any full episodes. I thought it would ruin the 'memory' of Game of Thorns. But after reading you, seems like I need to give it a try.
