KIDNAP!

I usually feel that those who are not suckers for attention to detail, enjoy films a lot better than the rest of us. Simply because, as far as the storyline is simple and the actors do a moderately good job, they are good to go. There used to be a time when I was like this and just saw films solely for their entertainment value, but I guess that’s no longer the case. What I believe, though, is that some films could be cut some slack, if you at least enjoy it on some general level.

Kidnap (2017)

Karla Dyson, waitress and single mother, takes her six-year-old son, Frankie, to a carnival. After receiving a call from her lawyer, who informs her of a custody battle involving Frankie, she loses sight of him and immediately begins searching, only to find his toy voice recorder on the floor. Looking across the parking lot, she sees a woman dragging Frankie into a car, with a man at the wheel. She begins screaming and running after them on foot, but they zoom away, and she immediately hops into the car to give them the chase of her life. With nothing left to lose except her son, Karla is ready to defy the odds.

What this film had going for me was the brilliant performance by Halle Berry. Her acting alone sustained this film till the end. I remember seeing this movie with my family, and listening to the sniffles of my mom saying I did not understand how deeply this ran since I wasn’t a mother yet. And I guess this film will truly resonate more with mothers who would understand what it’s like for your child’s life to be on the line.

The storyline was beautiful, and with good directing, it could have been executed beautifully, except there were so many loopholes in the script and a cluster of illogicalities that should not have been there and were difficult to ignore, let alone pardon. I saw how low the ratings were, though, and I couldn’t quite understand why.

Most people had a problem with her constantly voicing her thoughts in a way that didn’t feel particularly real, but my argument is that some people are just like that, you know? Being vocal about stuff like that.

Overall, I wouldn’t call this the most brilliant film. But at the time I saw it, I enjoyed it. Looking beyond the discrepancies in the plot, it’s not a bad watch if you’re into good acting that contains more elements of heart than anything else. Hope you enjoy!
