Films that don’t take themselves too seriously have a place in my heart. They don’t take themselves too seriously, and they don’t expect their viewers to as well, so it makes for an interesting watch. This is one of those films I enjoyed sometime in 2019. Simply because it was fun and there were no expectations. At least for me there wasn’t.
Written by Mark Perez and directed by John Daley and Johnathan Goldstein (who co-wrote Horrible Bosses), Game Night tells the story of these game-loving partiers who get drawn into a world of mayhem different from the fun they are used to. The main couple are Max(Jason Bateman)and Annie(Rachel McAdams) and they host weekly game nights at their house as games are what brought them together in the first place.
The other couples who double as their friends make a team. And then Brooks, the estranged brother of one of them returns with a success most of them can only dream of. He invites the team over to his house for a game night that promises to be different from what they’re used to. The game love partiers, as expected, jump on the invitation, but will soon realize that they may have signed up for far more than they bargained for.
I think the perfect description for this film wouldn’t be a horror, or thriller. I think an accurate description would be mystery comedy or more aptly, dark comedy. Because that is exactly what this film is... A comedy that stretches itself almost too thin for comfort, but is still comedy in itself. It’s such a witty piece that would have you rolling with the never ending wise cracks and comedic remarks. When I saw that Jonathan Goldstein co-directed this film, it made a lot of sense for it to have this level of humour. And I never got tired of all the Denzel Washington jokes as well.
I think the actors did incredibly. Rachael McAdams gives nothing but her best which I’m quite used to. She didn’t fail to disappoint and I just loved Jesse Plemons’ spectacular interpretation of his role. All the actors in my opinion went above and beyond to make this piece what it is, and I loved the film even more for how it turned out.
The first half of the film is pretty intense, and the intensity sustained for quite a while before falling a little into the incredulous. I mean, I shouldn’t have expected too much but the incredulity of some scenes had me questioning a few things. But I didn’t see this film as a critic, I watched it with an open mind and loved it for what it was. Which was a comedic masterpiece in its own right.
If I’m being honest, it’s not the type of film that you would remember a long while after watching. In fact you may just as well forget it afterwards. But for the duration of the film, you are guaranteed a swell time. I hardly skip any Bateman film if I can help it, anyway. So, I hope you enjoy this. What are your thoughts?

I love how you put that; it’s not a film you’ll remember for long, but you’ll have a great time while it lasts. I thought it was weird when I forgot a book just days after reading it, but now I see it’s a thing!
