The Mist (2017)

I have mixed feelings towards this movie. For many reasons I was hooked on it and then as it came to the end, I had so many questions. It doesn’t help that the show - according to sources - has been cancelled. Overall, it was a good source of entertainment until it wasn’t.

The Mist is a 2017 American horror-thriller series developed by Christian Torpe and based on the 1980 novella of the same name by Stephen King. It has only one season. The story begins in the small town of Bridgeville, Maine that becomes shrouded in a strange mist after a violent storm, cutting them off from the rest of the world.

It begins with Alex Copeland getting date raped and Jay Heisel being the prime suspect. I have to say that when it came to the sub plots, there were many. The apocalyptic atmosphere and the pandemonium sat well with me. It was a little boring in the beginning but it picked up at the introduction of “Bryan Hunt/Jonah Dixon”.

What I liked watching ten episodes of this movie was how immersive it was. From a certain point, the drama was worth it and many times I would hit the forward button to come to the point of contention. That happened only once unfortunately, because the only part of the series that was interesting enough to get my heart pounding was Jay being the victim of despaired minds and Kevin coming back from the “dead”.

What I still can’t wrap my head around is the switch up. It felt way too drastic. The 360 was enough to make me lose interest. I somehow saw Adrian being the rapist but I don’t understand how there wasn’t even a slight bit of forewarning to what he was. If the game was to blindside even the audience, then okay. However, it felt like they just needed to give a quick twist and turn a stable character to a crazed demon. I lost my zeal to continue watching at that point but I had only two more episodes.

The end was in a nutshell, bullshit. That is not a cliffhanger. That is the by-product of lazy writing. No wonder it got cancelled. There was no real plot, no true depth and just sub plots and side stories which to be fair, gave a bit of life to the series. I’d give this a 5 out of 10 stars.

Probably they just wanted to give the audience a unique ending different from what might be expected and they ended up ruining it, lol.
