Gestern hat Mark Zuckerberg die neuen AR und AI-Brillen von Meta vorgestellt. Am interessantesten ist dabei die weiterentwickelte AR-Brille in Kooperation mit Ray-Ban, die jetzt erstmals ein kleines Display enthält.
Das Display scheint sehr praktisch zu sein, kann zum Beispiel die Navigation anzeigen, Videoanrufe tätigen (was allerdings bei der Demo nicht funktioniert hat), oder Gespräche in Echtzeit übersetzen und einen Untertitel einblenden. Wie praktisch.
Bei der Live-Präsentation gab es allerdings gleich zwei Bugs. Erstens hat die AI-Funktion der Brille halluziniert. Als sie gefragt wurde beim Zubereiten einer Sauce zu assistieren, dachte die Brille, dass der erste Schritt bereits ausgeführt war.
Der Präsentator von Meta gab dann dem WiFi die Schuld, dass die KI noch nicht richtig funktioniert hat. Das war lustig.
Der zweite Bug betraf Mark Zuckerberg selbst, als er einen Video-Call mit der neuen Brille annehmen wollte. Das klappte überhaupt nicht, dürfte noch ein Bug sein.
Beide Fails waren jedoch halb so wild und ein Beweis, dass die Live-Demo wirklich live war und die KI-Präsentation nicht wie bei anderen Tech-Firmen manipuliert oder gestaged wurde. Das rechne ich Zuckerberg positiv an. Ist sympathisch.
Insgesamt finde ich die neue AI-Brillen eine spannende Entwicklung, erinnert mich ein bisschen an das Head-Up-Display von Terminator, aber es gibt zwei Entwicklungen bei Meta, die ich eher bedauere.
Erstens scheint es schon seit längerer Zeit einen Shift bei Meta von VR zu AR zu geben. Der Fokus scheint sich von den Quest-Brillen Richtung AR-Brillen mit Display zu bewegen. Ist cool, aber nicht dasselbe wie eine echte VR-Brille, die sich mehr für immersive Experiences und Gaming eignen.
Und das Zweite, was mir aufgefallen ist, ist dass die Preise für VR/AR-Brillen stark gestiegen sind. Die Quest 2 kostete bei der Einführung nur 299 Dollar, die Quest 3 bereits 499 Dollar und die neue Ray-Ban-Brille mit Display bereits 799 Dollar, was nicht mehr so erschwinglich ist.
Was sagt ihr zur neuen Ray-Ban Meta-Brille? Würdet ihr euch eine für $799 kaufen? Denkt ihr, dass sich AR/AI-Brillen gut verkaufen oder eher floppen werden? Was wäre euer Anwendungsfall für solche Brillen?

Yesterday, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Meta's new AR and AI glasses. The most interesting product are the new advanced AR glasses developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban, which now include a small display for the first time.
The display seems to be very practical, for example, it can show navigation, make video calls (which didn't work in the demo, though), or translate conversations in real time and display subtitles on the go. Fascinating stuff.
However, there were two bugs during the live presentation. First, the glasses' AI function hallucinated. When asked to assist in preparing a soy sauce, the glasses thought that the first step had already been completed.
The Meta presenter then blamed the WiFi for the AI not working properly. That was funny.
The second bug affected Mark Zuckerberg himself when he tried to accept a video call with the new glasses. It didn't work at all, which was probably another bug.
However, both fails were no big deal and proof that the live demo was really live and that the AI presentation was not manipulated or staged like it is with other tech companies. I give Zuckerberg credit for that. That's likeable.
Overall, I find the new AI glasses an exciting development, reminding me a bit of the head-up display in Terminator, but there are two developments at Meta that I rather regret.
First, there seems to have been a shift at Meta from VR to AR for quite some time. The focus seems to be moving away from Quest glasses toward AR glasses with displays. That's cool, but it's not the same as real VR glasses, which are more suited for immersive experiences and gaming.
And the second thing I noticed is that the prices for VR/AR glasses have risen sharply. The Quest 2 cost only $299 when it was launched, the Quest 3 already costs $499, and the new Ray-Ban glasses with display already cost $799, which is no longer so affordable.

If only Meta manages to get battery life and reliability well enough, these could be their next big thing maybe. Right now they look more like a cool prototype than a must have
I think overall it is a cool concept. I would not consider buying one at the moment, though. At this stage I would definitely expect a lot more bugs/problems to come up within a few weeks, other than the ones at the presentation. I also don't think it's worth 799$ for me.
same here, would be nice to try, but 800 bucks is too steep at the moment.
Ich könnte mir vorstellen, so ein Ding mal zu kaufen, wenn die Technik ausgereift ist. Jetzt ist sie es noch lange nicht. Preis ist OK, da Meta ohnehin nicht auf den Massenmarkt abzielt, sondern auf early adopter, die bereit sind, das zu zahlen. Später wird der Preis dann schon runterkommen.
Würde ich nicht zahlen dafür.
Finde es für 800+ Euro auch zu teuer, um es auszuprobieren. Wahrscheinlich auch noch nicht ganz ausgereift und vielleicht noch zu schwer, aber wäre cool es einmal zu testen.

That part when Mark Zuckerberg couldn't get the call going on live presentation was commendable to watch. He shrug it off and move on to the next one. I'd probably not buy one at this time, think it's too expensive for what's actually capable of doing, interesting features though.
The glasses are attractive for sure but, the price is out of the reach of most people. Besides, their production appears not to have reached a stabilized stage. Until then, it's wiser to wait for them to perfect the production before one can make a firm decision on them.
