Vier Astronauten fliegen in 10 Tagen im Orion-Raumschiff zum Mond und wieder zurück zur Erde und legen dabei über 1 Million Kilometer zurück, die Entfernung zum Mond beträgt circa 384 Tausend Kilometer, wobei sich der Mond aber auch mit ca 1 km/s (3682 km/h) um die Erde weiterbewegt. Die Latenz der Kommunikation beträgt ungefähr 1.3 Sekunden in eine Richtung und insgesamt ca 2.6 Sekunden, was ein Real-Time-Gespräch gerade noch möglich macht. Zwischen Planeten ist das dann nicht mehr möglich, da die Lichtgeschwindigkeit der limitierende Faktor ist.

Die Crew hat laut Medienberichten mit einer defekten WC-Anlage und mit Outlook-Problemen zu kämpfen. Auf einem Tablet funktionierten beide installierten Outlook-Versionen nicht mehr. Ein Problem, das wir auch von der Erde allzu gut kennen 😂 Eine Fernwartung konnte das Problem aber wieder beheben.

Während der Test-Phase wurden noch Wasserstoff-Lecks im Servicemast entdeckt, was die Mission um einige Monate verzögerte.

Die übernächste Artemis IV Mission soll dann im Jahr 2028 wieder Menschen am Mond landen, wenn bis dahin alles klappt und die Mission nicht nach hinten verschoben wird, was ich befürchte.

Insgesamt, ist es extrem beeindruckend, dass es die NASA im Jahr 1969 mit der damaligen limitierten Technik geschafft hat, Astronauten sicher am Mond zu landen und wieder zurückzubringen. Das ist unglaublich, wenn man bedenkt, wie komplex so eine Mission ist und es selbst mit der heutigen Technik unheimlich schwierig ist.

New impressive images from NASA's Artemis II Moon flyby mission.

Four astronauts will fly to the Moon and back to Earth in 10 days aboard the Orion spacecraft, covering over 1 million kilometers. The distance to the Moon is approximately 384,000 kilometers, though the Moon is also moving around the Earth at a speed of about 1 km/s (3,682 km/h). Communication latency is approximately 1.3 seconds one-way and about 2.6 seconds round-trip, which just barely allows for real-time conversation. Between planets, this is no longer possible, as the speed of light is the limiting factor.

According to media reports, the crew is struggling with a malfunctioning toilet system and Outlook issues. Neither of the two installed versions of Outlook was working on a tablet. A problem we know all too well here on Earth 😂 However, remote maintenance was able to resolve the issue.

During the test phase, hydrogen leaks were discovered in the service mast, which delayed the mission by several months.

The next-but-one Artemis IV mission is scheduled to land humans on the Moon again in 2028, assuming everything goes according to plan and the mission isn’t postponed, which I fear might happen.

Overall, it’s incredibly impressive that NASA managed to land astronauts safely on the Moon and bring them back in 1969 with the limited technology available at the time. That’s unbelievable when you consider how complex such a mission is and how incredibly difficult it remains even with today’s technology.
