Prohibition 2.0: UK introducing smoking ban for Gen Z/Alpha and future generations, people born after 2008 won't be able to buy tobacco any more. Do you think this will work?

UK hat ein Tabak-Kaufverbot für Gen Z/Alpha und zukünftige Generationen beschlossen, alle Bürger die nach 2008 geboren sind, dürfen in Zukunft keine Zigaretten, Vaping- und Tabak-Produkte kaufen, das soll verboten werden, das Rauchen an sich bleibt aber weiterhin legal.

Damit erhofft sich UK eine raucherfreie Generation zu schaffen. Eine Art Prohibition 2.0, aber diesmal auf Rauchen, nicht auf Alkohol bezogen. Alkohol-Verbote wurden in den letzten 100 Jahren bereits von vielen Ländern probiert unter anderem von den USA und der Soviet-Union, haben aber niemals wirklich funktioniert und wurden schnell wieder aufgegeben.

Bin skeptisch, ob das wirklich durchsetzbar ist, kann als Nicht-Raucher die Gesundheitsargumente verstehen, dass man das Rauchen einschränken möchte, denke aber nicht, dass man leichte Drogen generell verbieten kann.

Menschen werden dann auf andere Drogen ausweichen, die mitunter noch gefährlicher sein können und man schafft mit der Prohibition wiederum neue Probleme wie einen Schwarzmarkt und Beschaffungskriminalität.

Denke nicht die Drogen an sich sind das Problem, sondern die wahren Probleme sind vielschichtiger und tiefgründiger. Gesellschaftliche und Mental Health Krise. Rauchverbote werden diese Probleme nicht lösen, sondern bekämpfen nur die Symptome.

Was meint ihr? Denkt ihr, dass das Rauchverbot / Tabak-Kaufverbot Sinn macht, oder wird das ähnlich wie die Prohibition in den USA schnell scheitern?

The UK parliament has agreed on a ban on tobacco sales for Gen Z / Alpha, and future generations, all citizens born after 2008 will be prohibited from purchasing cigarettes, vaping products, and other tobacco products in the future, though smoking itself will remain legal.

With this, the UK hopes to create a smoke-free generation. A sort of Prohibition 2.0, but this time focused on smoking, not alcohol. Alcohol bans have already been tried by many countries over the past 100 years, including the US and the Soviet Union, but they never really worked and were quickly abandoned.

I’m skeptical about whether this is truly enforceable. As a non-smoker, I understand the health arguments for wanting to restrict smoking, but I don’t think you can generally ban soft drugs.

People will then turn to other drugs, which can be even more dangerous, and prohibition will in turn create new problems, such as black markets and drug-related crime.

I don’t think drugs themselves are the problem, rather, the real issues are more nuanced and profound. Social and mental health crisis. Smoking bans won’t solve these problems, they’ll only treat the symptoms.
