Peakd (Hive) finally got a "For You" feed. How do you like the new personalized feed? Is it relevant for you?

@peakd (Hive) hat jetzt auch einen personalisierten "For You"-Feed. Algo. Aber die Daten für den Feed stammen nicht von einem intransparenten Tracking- und Ranking-Mechanismus, sondern der Algo ist open-source und verwendet User-Daten von der Blockchain, die ohnehin öffentlich sind.

Postings der letzten Tage werden personalisiert gerankt, die Signale dafür sind Relevanz (40%), Recency (30%), Engagement (20%) und Credibility (10%). Die Zahlen in den Klammern sind die Gewichte, wobei Relevanz das höchste Gewicht erhält und versucht Postings zu matchen, die einen inhaltlich vermutlich aufgrund der letzten Upvotes interessieren könnten.

Zusätzlich bekommen Postings, deren Community man beigetreten ist, einen zusätzlichen Community Boost, was Postings aus den abonnierten Communities pusht.

Neben dem neuen "For You" Affinity-Feed bietet peakd auch noch weitere Custom Feeds an, die ihr ausprobieren könnt.

Vermisse noch die Einstellung für den Default-Feed, damit man den bevorzugten Feed nicht immer manuell einstellen muss.

Denke, der neue open-source basierte personalisierte Ranking-Algorithmus ist ein interessanter Ansatz, um die Discoverability und das Engagement auf Hive zu erhöhen, hat aber auch seine Limitierungen, da nur öffentlich zugängliche Daten wie Upvotes verwendet werden, aber nicht getrackt wird, welche Postings die User tatsächlich lesen und interessieren.

Ein weiterer Nachteil ist der Implementierungs- und Compute-Aufwand für personalisierte Feeds. Je komplizierter der Algo desto aufwendiger wird die Berechnung der personalisierten Feeds, was in lange Ladezeiten resultieren kann, wenn der Code und die Infrastruktur dahinter nicht optimiert sind bzw. das Projekt nicht die nötigen Ressourcen und Manpower dafür hat.

Auf nostr zum Beispiel laden manche Feeds gefühlt ewig, da vergeht einem dann die Lust durch die Feeds zu scrollen, wenn man eine halbe Minute oder länger warten muss, bis der Feed überhaupt generiert und geladen wurde.

How "Affinity" works

Affinity is a personalized recommendation feed powered by HAF FYP. It uses your public Hive activity to rank recent posts without relying on off-chain tracking.

• Ranking combines relevance to your recent activity, recency, engagement, and author credibility.
• Posts from communities you subscribe to or engage with can receive an >additional community boost.
• If there is not enough activity to personalize the feed yet, it falls back to a >globally ranked feed.
• The algorithm weights and per-post ranking signals are published by the HAF FYP >API.
• Hidden tags, ignored accounts, NSFW preferences, and minimum author reputation are still applied client-side after loading.

@peakd (Hive) now finally has a personalized “For You” feed. It's algo-driven. However, the data for the feed doesn't come from an opaque tracking and ranking mechanism, instead, the algo is open-source and uses user data from the blockchain, which is publicly available anyway.

Posts from the last few days are ranked based on personal preferences, using the following signals: relevance (40%), recency (30%), engagement (20%), and credibility (10%). The numbers in parentheses represent the weights, with relevance receiving the highest weight, the algorithm attempts to match posts whose content is likely to interest you probably based on your recent upvotes.

Additionally, posts from communities you’ve joined receive an extra “Community Boost,” which prioritizes posts from the communities you follow.

In addition to the new “For You” Affinity Feed, peakd also offers other custom feeds that you can try out.

I still miss the option to set a default feed so you don’t always have to manually select your preferred feed.

I think the new open-source-based personalized ranking algorithm is an interesting approach to increasing discoverability and engagement on Hive, but it also has its limitations, since it only uses publicly available data like upvotes and doesn’t track which posts users actually read and find interesting.

Another drawback is the implementation and computational overhead for personalized feeds. The more complex the algorithm, the more resource-intensive it becomes to calculate personalized feeds, which can result in long loading times if the underlying code and infrastructure aren’t optimized or if the project lacks the necessary resources and manpower.

On nostr, for example, some feeds feel like they take forever to load, it really kills the desire to scroll through them when you have to wait half a minute or longer just for the feed to be generated and loaded.
