OpenClaw founder almost deleted the project because of crypto scammers. Responds to Austrian state TV interview criticism, reason for leaving Europe, overregulation and mindest in the EU.

In einem dreistündigen (!) Interview mit Lex Fridman erzählt der österreichische Founder von OpenClaw Peter Steinberger eine Anekdote, dass er das Projekt wegen Crypto Scammern fast aufgegeben hätte.

Das passierte zu der Zeit, wo er das Projekt mehrmals wegen Namestreitigkeiten mit Anthropic umbenennen musste.

Bei der Umbenennung der Projekts auf github kam es dann zu mehreren Pannen. Krypto-Scammer sollen das kurze Zeitfenster der Umbenennung von nur wenigen Sekunden genutzt haben, um den alten oder neuen Namen zu hijacken.

Bei der Umbenennung muss man extrem aufpassen, vor allem wenn man das Projekt auf mehreren Plattformen migrieren möchte, dass man das so atomar wie möglich macht und in der richtigen Reihenfolge ohne den alten Account frühzeitig zu löschen und den neuen Namen frühzeitig preiszugeben, damit dieser von Scammern nicht übernommen werden kann.

Die Scammer haben dann angeblich irgendwelche Shitcounts auf den gegrabten Accounts beworben.

Denke, das Problem hat nicht unmittelbar etwas mit Krypto zu tun, sondern das sind einfach Betrüger, die Krypto nutzen, um damit Geld zu machen.

Mittlerweile hat Peter auch zu der Kritik im öffentlich-rechtlichen Fernsehen reagiert. Er wurde im gesamten ORF-Interview auch in der Langfassung kein einziges Mal gefragt, warum er die EU verlasse. Auf X hat er dazu persönlich Stellung bezogen und nennt die Überregulierung (Investitionsschutzgesetz, Mitarbeiterbeteiligung bei Startups, Arbeitsregulierungen etc.) und das Mindset das Problem.

In den USA arbeiten Mitarbeiter von IT-Startups oft 6-7 Tage die Woche, in der EU wäre das alles illegal, wird aber trotzdem bei erfolgreichen Startups auch hier so gemacht. Gründer und Unternehmer arbeiten auch in Österreich oft rund um die Uhr, ohne große Anerkennung und werden dann als Ausbeuter und Reiche dargestellt, obwohl sie selber sehr große Opfer erbringen.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Ich hoffe, dass die Krypto-Betrüger keinen bleibenden negativen Eindruck auf Peter hinterlassen haben, und bin froh, dass er das Projekt nicht wegen den Krypto-Scammern aufgegeben hat.

In a three-hour (!) interview with Lex Fridman, Austrian OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger recounts an anecdote about how he almost gave up on the project because of crypto scammers.

This happened at a time when he had to rename the project several times due to naming disputes with Anthropic.

When renaming the project on GitHub, several mishaps occurred. Crypto scammers are said to have used the short window of only a few seconds during the renaming process to hijack the old or new name.

When renaming, you have to be extremely careful, especially if you want to migrate the project to multiple platforms, to do so as atomically as possible and in the correct order without deleting the old account prematurely and revealing the new name too early, so that it cannot be taken over by scammers.

The scammers then allegedly advertised some shitcoins on the hijacked accounts.

I think the problem is not directly related to crypto, but rather that these are simply fraudsters using crypto to make money.

Peter has now also responded to the criticism on public television. Throughout the entire interview in Austrian state TV, even in the long version, he was not asked once why he was leaving the EU. However now he commented on this personally on X, citing overregulation (investment protection laws, employee participation in startups, labor regulations, etc.) and the mindset in the EU as the problem.

In the US, employees of IT startups often work 6-7 days a week, which would be illegal in the EU, but is still done this way at successful startups here. Founders and entrepreneurs in Austria also often work around the clock without much recognition and are then portrayed as exploiters and rich, even though they themselves make very big sacrifices.
