Hugging Face hat sich dann im AI-Boom zur zentralen Hosting-Plattform für KI-Modelle und Data-Sets entwickelt.
Vor allem Open Weights-Modelle werden im Moment primär auf Hugging Face gehostet. Mit zunehmender Regulierung könnte die Plattform aber an Bedeutung verlieren, und sich KI-Modelle eher Richtung dezentralem Hosting und P2P verlagern, sollte Hugging Face wie ein Gatekeeper agieren.
Andererseits hätte Nvidia als neuer Eigentürmer auch Interesse, dass möglichst viele User KI-Modelle auf Nvidia-Hardware betreiben.
Interessant ist auch, dass Hugging Face nicht in der EU, sondern in den USA gegründet wurde.
Aber selbst wenn Hugging Face in der EU gegründet worden wäre, wäre es spätestens jetzt wieder von einer US-Firma übernommen worden, da es in der EU kein strategisches Denken in Bezug auf KI, FinTech und IT-Startups, in der EU zu halten, gibt.
Zu befürchten ist, dass Open‑Source‑KI‑Modelle und Plattformen zunehmend in den Fokus immer restriktiverer EU‑Regulierung geraten werden.
Was sagt ihr zur Übernahme? Denkt ihr, dass Hugging Face sich im Auftrag der EU zu einem Gatekeeper für KI-Modelle entwickelt wird? Könnte sich der Vertrieb von KI-Modellen in Folge auf andere Websites verlagern, falls die EU-Regulierung zu restriktiv wird?

Nvidia is acquiring Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Hugging Face was founded in 2016 by French entrepreneurs Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, originally to develop a chatbot app.
During the AI boom, Hugging Face then evolved into the central hosting platform for AI models and datasets.
OpenWeights models, in particular, are currently hosted primarily on Hugging Face. However, with increasing regulation, the platform could lose significance, and AI models might shift toward decentralized and P2P hosting if Hugging Face were to act as a gatekeeper.
On the other hand, as the new owner, Nvidia would also have an interest in having as many users as possible run AI models on Nvidia hardware.
It’s also interesting to note that Hugging Face was founded in the U.S., not in the EU.
But even if Hugging Face had been founded in the EU, it would have been acquired by a U.S. company by now at the latest, since there is no strategic thinking in the EU about retaining AI, fintech, and IT startups within the EU.
There is concern that open-source AI models and platforms will increasingly come under the scrutiny of ever-more-restrictive and limiting EU regulations.
