English

Scenes from Madrid, Spain. The equestrian statue of King Carlos III of Spain (reigned 1759–1788) in the central square, Puerta del Sol, serves as a reminder of the glorious days of the Spanish Empire, which stretched across large parts of South, Central and North America. In the 19th century, the empire gradually disintegrated, ultimately leading to the Mexican War of Independence and the acquisition of the Spanish provinces of Louisiana and Florida by the United States.
