Inside Park Güell (Gaudi's Wonderland) in Barcelona (Photo gallery)

(edited)

Park Güell is named after financier and industrialist Eusebi Güell, who commissioned renowned Spanish (Catalan) architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) to design the park in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Gaudi, an opponent of “straight lines,” is known for his extravagant architectural style “Modernisme,” which focuses more on curves, natural forms, and colorful mosaics. The style reminds me very much of Hundertwasser's architecture in Vienna. However, Hundertwasser was active after Gaudi.

Another remarkable feature of Park Güell is that it was designed to serve as a large rainwater filtration system. A large empty space in the center of the park collects rainwater and filters it through the sandy soil. Beneath it is a large water reservoir. An ingenious concept.

A visit to the park is definitely worthwhile, but it is important to note that tickets for the park can now only be purchased online. As reported last week, to the annoyance of many tourists, tickets are not sold on site.

How do you like Gaudi's architecture? Have you ever been to Barcelona?

The curves and mosaics are pure art. Park Güell’s rainwater system is a very smart touch too. Never been to Barcelona, but it’s high on my list. I actually do think Gaudi’s work is ahead of its time though

So annoying, why everything in Spain has to be online only? Nice trip tough

Yes I've been to Barcelona but unfortunately I didn't have the time or energy to visit Park Güell. But it's still on my list ;)

Park Güell looks like such a magical place with Gaudí’s colorful designs. I didn’t know about the rainwater system, that’s really clever! Thanks for the tip about tickets, very useful for anyone planning to visit.

Gaudi must have been a skilled architect because the park he designed is a real beauty, and no doubt spending time there will be lots of fun, with the fountains, trees and excellent buildings.
