How to pronounce Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Also confusing for native English speakers.

(edited)

English (UK): Ed-in-bu-ra [ed.ɪn.bʌr.ə]

English (US): Ed-in-bo-ro [ed.ɪn.bɝː.oʊ]

Ich persönlich bevorzuge mittlerweile die schottische Aussprache, die auf bra endet, da diese am einfachsten über die Zunge rollt.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Wie ist eure bevorzugte Aussprache von Edinburgh? Wart ihr schon mal in Schottland? Versteht ihr das schottische Englisch?

How to pronounce Edinburgh

English

Now I finally know how to pronounce Edinburgh, which is also confusing for many English native speakers who are not Scottish.

The exact origin of the city's name is not entirely clear, but it probably refers to the name of the central castle, the fortress of the town (Edinburgh Castle), which was located on the hill “Din Eidyn”, Eidyn presumably a person's name and Din for hillfort.

The second part of the name Burgh is particularly difficult for many people to pronounce. It probably originates from the Germanic word “Burg” (fortress) or from the Old English “burh”.

English people therefore pronounce burgh more like the more familiar word “borough”.

However, many Scots pronounce burgh more like “bra”, omitting a vowel, so to speak.

This results in three common pronunciations that you will hear in Edinburgh:

Scottish: Ed-in-bra [ed.ɪn.brə]

English (UK): Ed-in-bu-ra [ed.ɪn.bʌr.ə]

English (US): Ed-in-bo-ro [ed.ɪn.bɝː.oʊ]

Personally, I now prefer the Scottish pronunciation that ends in bra, as it rolls most easily over the tongue.

What is your preferred pronunciation of Edinburgh? Have you ever been to Scotland? Do you understand or even speak Scottish English?

Find auch das schottische "Edinbra" am sympathischsten. Generell hat mir Schottland auch besser gefallen als England!

And what if some German comes around and starts calling the town simply Ending-Burg, with a strong Tschörmen accent? Would the Scots care? Would they find it funny?

I knew that the scottish pronunciation is different from the english one but I did not realize that it's also different in the US.
I also prefer the scottish pronunciation. I think scottish in general is a cool accent.

If I had to choose, I’d say the Scottish pronunciation Ed-in-bra has a special charm. Its fluid and distinctive sound reflects the city’s vibrant spirit and rich cultural heritage. Plus, the simplified form makes it easier to say.

That is an interesting thing to know. I would have probably mispronounced it just by reading it.
