EU parliament voted for the Digital Euro and keeping "voluntary" chat control. Official post on X got community noted, denying the term "chat control". What is it then?

Das EU-Parlament hat letzte Woche den Weg für Trilog-Verhandlung für die Einführung des Digitalen Euros geebnet.

Und dann gab es noch eine extrem kontroverse Abstimmung die temporäre, "freiwillige" Chat-Kontrolle von Online-Diensten zu beenden. Bei dieser Abstimmung haben zwar die Mehrheit für die Beendigung gestimmt, aber die Mehrheit reichte durch einen Trick nicht aus, um die Chat-Control in der EU zu beenden. Es waren nicht genug Abgeordnete anwesend, um das nötige Quorum zu erreichen.

Auch wenn die Chat-Control freiwillig ist, geht dies meiner Meinung nach in die falsche Richtung. Für mich wirkt es, als wolle die EU mittels Salamitaktik immer mehr anlasslose Massen-Überwachung einführen. Zunächst ist die Chat-Control freiwillig, dann werden Plattformen mit anderen Regulierungen gedrängt, CSAM zu verhindern und der einzige Weg ist dann die freiwillige Chat-Control zu implementieren, die dann irgendwann verpflichtend wird.

Vielleicht sehe ich es zu pessimistisch, was denkt ihr? Warum werden immer mehr Bereiche des Lebens reguliert und gefühlt immer mehr Freiheiten eingeschränkt?

Last week, the European Parliament paved the way for trilogue negotiations on the introduction of the digital euro.

And then there was an extremely controversial vote to end the temporary, “voluntary” chat control of online services. Although a majority voted in favor of ending it, a procedural maneuver meant that the majority was not sufficient to end chat control in the EU. Not enough members of the European Parliament were present to reach the necessary quorum.

Even though chat control is voluntary, I believe this is a step in the wrong direction. To me, it seems as though the EU wants to use a “salami tactic” to gradually introduce more and more unwarranted mass surveillance. First, chat control is voluntary, then, platforms are pressured by other regulations to prevent CSAM, and voilà, the only way to comply is to implement voluntary chat control, which will eventually become mandatory.

Maybe I’m being too pessimistic, what do you think? Why are more and more areas of life being regulated, and why does it feel like our freedoms are being increasingly restricted?
