Dead Internet Theory: Bot traffic will exceed human traffic by a factor of 1,000 in five years

Laut Cloudflare, einem globalen Content-Delivery-Anbieter, hat der Bot-generierte Traffic bereits den von Humans im Mai dieses Jahres überholt. Das bedeutet, dass bereits mehr Bots auf Content zugreifen als Menschen, was heftig ist.

Zu bedenken ist, dass hinter den Bots eine initiale, menschlichen Anfrage an eine KI stecken könnte. Wenn ein Mensch eine KI-Suchmaschine etwas fragt, grast im Hintergrund eine KI Duzende Websites nach relevantem Content ab. Das erzeugt enormen Traffic auf besagten Seiten, die aber formal von Bots ausgehen, auch wenn die eigentliche KI-Anfrage noch von einem Menschen initiiert wurde.

Das Problem ist aber, dass Bot-Traffic keinen Umsatz mehr für die Websites generiert, und daher das Incentive überhaupt sinnvollen Content für das Internet zu produzieren, zunehmend schwindet. Das ist der Kern hinter der Dead Internet Theory.

In einigen Jahren könnte der KI-basierte Traffic im Internet noch stärker ansteigen, und den menschlichen Traffic um den Faktor 1,000 überholen, vor allem wenn auch KI-Agenten zunehmend über das Internet kommunizieren und Arbeiten über das Internet verteilen. Zum Beispiel Video-Feeds zwecks KI-Analyse im Hintergrund an eine KI senden etc, das erzeugt enormen Traffic.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Denkt ihr, dass an dieser Prognose etwas Wahres dran ist? Wie mit Webseiten und Apps überhaupt noch Geld verdienen, wenn KIs bald alles selber vibe-coden und beantworten können, ohne dass man mehr externe Websites und Apps verwenden muss?

According to Cloudflare, a global content delivery provider, bot-generated traffic already surpassed that generated by humans in May of this year. That means more bots are already accessing content than humans, which is pretty wild.

It’s important to note that behind these bots there could be an initial human query to an AI. When a person asks an AI search engine a question, an AI crawls dozens of websites in the background for relevant content. This generates enormous traffic on those sites, but it’s technically attributed to bots, even though the actual AI query was initiated by a human.

The problem, however, is that bot traffic no longer generates revenue for websites, and therefore the incentive to produce meaningful original content for the internet in the first place is increasingly dwindling. This is the core of the “Dead Internet Theory.”

In a few years, AI-based traffic on the internet could rise even more sharply, surpassing human traffic by a factor of 1,000, especially if AI agents also increasingly communicate over the internet and distribute work via the internet. For example, sending video feeds to an AI in the background for analysis, generates enormous traffic.
