Austrian Sunday‑open grocery stores are forced to close sections of their shop due to regulation 🙈

Die wenigen Supermärkte, die in Österreich am Sonntag geöffnet haben dürfen, das sind zum Beispiel Supermärkte bei großen Bahnhöfen oder am Flughafen, dürfen am Sonntag nicht ihr ganzes Sortiment anbieten, und müssen gegebenenfalls Teile des Shops barrikadieren, so wie hier am Wiener Praterstern.

Das führt zu skurrilen Situationen, dass teilweise mehr Produkte gesperrt werden, als sie rechtlich müssten. Zum Beispiel ist im Billa (REWE) am Praterstern am Sonntag der ganze Tiefkühl-Bereich gesperrt.

Am Sonntag dürfen nur Produkte des täglichen Bedarfs verkauft werden, manche Drogerie-Artikel (Hygieneartikel) dürfen verkauft werden, andere wiederum nicht.

Generell dürfen keine Non-Food-Artikel wie Bücher, DVDs, Spielwaren, Bekleidung und auch keine Haushaltselektronik verkauft werden.

In Deutschland dürfte die Regelung übrigens ähnlich restriktiv sein.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Macht das überhaupt noch Sinn, die Öffnungszeiten derart einzuschränken?

The few supermarkets in Austria that are allowed to open on Sundays, such as those located near major train stations or at the airport, are not permitted to offer their entire product range on Sundays and may have to cordon off parts of the store, as is the case here at Vienna’s Praterstern store.

This leads to bizarre situations where, in some cases, more products are cordoned off than is legally required. For example, at the Billa (REWE) grocery store at Praterstern, the entire frozen food section is cordoned off on Sundays.

On Sundays, only everyday necessities may be sold, some drugstore items (hygiene products) are permitted, while others are not (like perfume).

In general, non-food items such as books, DVDs, toys, clothing, and household electronics may not be sold.

Incidentally, the regulations in Germany are likely to be similarly restrictive.
