If you didn't get a chance to check out the latest CryptoManiacs podcast, make sure you do. As I got inspired by the talk we had yesterday for this post.
Regardless of all the bells and whistles this blockchain has going on for it, there is still a huge opportunity for content creators on Hive. Yes, I understand, we are much more than a blogging platform. However this does cater to a huge segment of the population, especially those that have this crazy dream (like I do) to make a living off their content!
Hearing both @shadowspub and @taskmaster4450 discuss the merits of creating on the chain, Task left me with something to contemplate over the past 24 hours...
And I'm paraphrasing but he said:
"We all need to treat our time on Hive like a business!"
Powerful if you really dig deep into this statement...Which of course, I plan to do right now ;)
If you have read my blog in the past, you'll know I've compared being an entrepreneur like a blue chip stock in the market. Blue chips are the big bets, even at times the safe bet. Because they have a track record of performance. They pay 'dividends' at times to stock holders and are always the assets that are top of mind when people discuss the markets.
Compare this to being an entrepreneur:
We want people to 'bet' on us. By that, it's either engaging with us, read our content or watching it. Subscribing to our videos, etc. The safe bet comes from the next point too...
We want to give our followers and subscribers a history or track record of actually...Delivering value! People will feel 'safe' when they see that your podcast has reached episode 100. They are more likely to do business with you when they see your portfolio of value from producing content on chain of time.
As for dividends, it's all about value! Whether you are writing or producing content that helps others. Providing a product or service that helps someone, the dividend you 'pay' is the value you are giving your followers and customers.
And finally, being top of mind is a no brainer. I've spoken about this countless times on my blog but it's this simple...If you show up once a month, and rarely engage with others, no one will remember you never mind do business with you. The more you show up and consistently show up, the more you become top of mind.
So getting back to the convo we had on the podcast yesterday, I woke up today feeling a sense of 'professionalism' lol Now I'm not saying I go through a week and just twiddle my thumbs and 'say' I'm working. However today I tried to put a little bit more structure to my day.
I wanted to work on a blog post, do a few marketing mails for my tribe / company, engage with the community and then finally bang out this blog post. I literally, broke my day down into quarters, a few hours each. Each task, I worked on it until it was complete and now I'm sitting back, enjoying a hot coffee and getting ready to call it a day!
I treated my day, and my time on Hive like a business!
"But Jongo....How the heck does that work for me? I'm just trying to find my voice on Hive and haven't started blogging or creating yet?"
And TREAT it like a business. You have to remember, commenting is a HUGE reward for not only the creator but also you and your journey. And we you break it down like this, your day becomes that much more powerful.
What do I mean?
Let's say you take Task up on his 500 comment challenge, or you decide that the CTP Grind challenge is something you want to dive into. Put some structure to your day. Allocate a certain amount of time, and focus on those tasks until it's complete.
A simple 'structure' might look like this:
I want to make 500 comments in a month on Hive.
That is roughly 16-17 comments a day.
I know that 16-17 comments means I need to spend about 30 minutes diving into people's content and then offering some valuable feedback, input or comments.
Maybe you aren't as fast at reading and devouring content as others, so you allocate an hour to the content.
You have 1440 minutes in the day, you now know to put some structure to this stuff, you need to spend 60 of those minutes on your....Business!
And here's the pay off....
Imagine if...Just for the sake of being a dreamer, each one of those 40-some odd cents Hive tokens you are earning right now, turns into 4 bucks a token! Seems crazy, but we've seen it happen on the legacy chain. And you are earning 5-10 Hive a day...Just from commenting....
Do the math!
20 to 40 bucks potentially a day, just from...Commenting.
Add in some of your own blog posts and content and presto....
You've got yourself a business!
Pretty cool huh? Now we all just need to treat it as such....

Awesome post tonight brother!!

Absolutely!
I'm always trying to remember to check out the content of those that stop by my blog. Reciprocity and all :)

We really need to put effort to Hive just like a business so we can grow in the community.
I'm still learning in the platform after the long hiatus (because of being a noob).
Your post gave me another reason on why should I (everyone) pursue something on Hive.
!PIZZA
It's a remarkable place. And the more you put in here, the more you get out!
!CTP
Oh yes! Planning to add more 😎
500 comments in a month, at first that seemed like a lot to me. However, in retrospect I probably leave between 20-30 replies/comments on just twitter alone on a daily basis.
So why not actually get paid for those engagements instead of Twatter getting paid for them?
We will see, only time will tell if I decide to start commenting and engaging on here more.
Yeah when you break it down daily, it's very achievable :)

Fantastic advice there Jon, treating our time on Hive as a business will surely give us the results we want, keep up your great work and stay awesome.

500 Comments a month is no big deal for many people.
I like to check the weekly stats from engagement league to see the level of engagement those guys put in. Haha. It's MASSIVE!
Hive surely means more to many people. Their effort will always speak for them. Nice!
Track record gives others confidence that they are doing business for a long time, they will not disappear. It builds trust. When someone treats Hive as a business, every move he makes on Hive has a meaningful impact.
Yes, we see the HIVE ATH price. It would be awesome just to remind yourself that HIVE price will hit ATH again. It just takes time. And this is time to accumulate and be prepared for the future.
I feel commenting does work and also the thing is that networking with the other writers and creators is in itself a business. It's just that on Hive we have to create content for getting the support back. So commenting is for connections, making content is for showing up on platform. Both needs to be done side by side.
Exactly!
You never know who you will meet, but also who is watching the comments and engagement!

That's why building up the reputation number is so important on Hive. I've made it my personal goal to reach 70 reputation before the end of the year.
Writing down my goals for the day (pen to paper) made a huge difference for me. Commenting on 5 Leofinance posts (Not counting replies) a day is one of my goals for the time being. I will slowly work my way up to 20 comments per day as the habit starts to form.
You do a great job of encouraging and guiding people on how to grow on Hive, keep it up 😉
Thank you

Awesome to hear it!
Yeah I know a lot of people dont like the rep system, but I think it's a great metric. To know you are growing and adding value :)

Calling it a business in Canada at least makes me side-eye it for when the tax man comes around - let me stay with the ol' trusty cap gains/cap loss taxes lmao. But yeah, commenting is a powerful motivator for folks on chain to keep going and definitely helps build friendships here.
Incorporate!
Get a great accountant and you are golden :)
!CTP
Yeah at this point, Hive is my business. But yeah, it takes hard work and treating it like a full on business!
And there is no better time to start commenting than the morning toilet session! Work anytime, anywhere, lol
I Hive while I am…
I can't get that gif and 'song' out of my head now....
And now I gotta flush!!!!!

Your welcome, lol!
Listen to this man. He knows what he is talking about. I did. I am living proof that hat he says works.
Learn it, put it into practice, keep growing.
Simple formula :)

If we consider our activity on hive as a business, we automatically tend to do things more professionally. It's definitely a good mindset to have to be successful on the chain!
Like you said man, it's all mindset!

I really enjoyed watching your podcast with @taskmaster4450 and @shadowspub yesterday.
And yes, I do agree that we have to treat it like a business. I've heard statements such as "don't do it for the rewards" or "just do it for the love of what you are doing"...and while I do agree with these statements because we need to enjoy what we are doing, I also believe that we shouldn't shy away from that the fact that the rewards are important to us as well.
We sometimes wonder why people are looking "funny" at us when we start talking about HIVE (and even other cryptocurrencies)... But if we do not start taking it seriously and treat it like a business, how can we expect anybody else to do so?
Thank you for (1) yesterday's great discussion in your podcast and (2) today's reminder to treat it like a business.
I chuckle when I see someone say "I don't do it for the rewards"...been tempted a few times to say .. Okay.. just write and decline them then.
I think one of the empowering parts of writing on Web3 is that the income is hardwired into the system. So, you can write for the love of writing and have income follow which is a great way to build a business. Denying that the rewards are a factor is neither businesslike nor honest.
I love that...LOL!! Well said!
I agree 100% with what you have said here. It's great to write for the love of writing. In fact, I think if you don't love writing, you're going to be in for a hard time trying to do it... (money or no money), but...
That is so true.
Of course I'm here for the rewards. If it wasn't for the rewards, I wouldn't be here.
Thanks for the support and kind words man!
Yeah, every single thing I do here has a bigger picture for me. Yeah, I wanna build something great for my customers and community, but I also want to feed my family LOL
Nothing wrong with that IMO :)
!CTP
Absolutely true!
I guess we just have to go all in and treat things seriously, like an actual business long before it becomes one. Structuring you time is a great way to get things done effectively. I do it every time!
It's just a mindset. If we structure things and have the goals in place, big things happen!
!CTP
Ok, 500 is a bit too much 😁 but yes, that's the way to treat Hive for sure. As you said, every dollar you make today could easily transform itself in 10, or 20 or more.
PS: I realize you guys go live too late an night, I'll never be able to attend live. That sucks...I'll listen to the recordings though.
500 a month, is like 16-17 comments a day. That's something anyone can do :)
Time zones suck for sure. I remember 20 years ago when I was starting to build an online business, the guy I worked for was in Australia. So for about 5 years, I was on Perth, WA time :)
!CTP
In some way, this has been my idea about how I spent my time here but then there is a push and pull motion considering I don't want to mix my hobby time mindset with grinding mindset and end up hating what I do. I can get behind the message of this post and I think it's one of the most creative motivators to be productive and be building something of value on the blockchain while having "fun" grinding those engagement.
It really begins to add up. But you are right, if it turns into a 'task' it's not as enjoyable. A way to look at it, is building relationships. Much more rewarding.

I'm printing it out lol

Great philosophy and way to look at things! Cheers.
Thanks man, and it changed how I approach it all!

Very inspiring post, Jon. You had that topic “Hive = business” before and I already liked back then.
The aspect with the comments is very true. Not only the one one with the earnings but the one about giving something valuable back to the creators by commenting. I can confirm that from my experience: the best blog posts or in my case also podcast episodes are the ones with also comments/feedback from the people hearing it. 👍🏻
Regards Thomas
Appreciate the kind words!
Yeah it's a topic I think I even need to remind myself of...Constantly lol

500 comments a month doesn't seem that bad and I can cover that in a good week if I am up for it. I guess 500 might take 2 weeks if I am as busy as I am now.

Here's one more idea, that was given to me and I jumped on it, after initially thinking I couldn't do it. Add 'social targets' (as I call them) to your weekly Hive goals. I constantly surpass mine, even now when I focus a lot of energy on SplinterGlossary.
