Santa Pola Vibes .:. A Search For a Home [EN/ES]

Slowly but surely, I'm publishing parts of my photo "library" that I wanted to share with you guys... I would like to share with you a part of this multi-town walk that I did last year in May... Those times were probably one of the hardest for my family as then we got the bad news from our landlord that she wants to raise our rent for 20%... We were already paying a significant amount at those moments, and 20% on top of that was unacceptable and impossible for us to do...

Poco a poco, voy publicando partes de mi «biblioteca» fotográfica que quería compartir con vosotros.... Me gustaría compartir con vosotros una parte de este paseo por varias ciudades que hice el año pasado en mayo... Aquellos tiempos fueron probablemente uno de los más duros para mi familia ya que entonces recibimos la mala noticia de nuestro casero de que nos quiere subir el alquiler un 20%.... Ya estábamos pagando una cantidad importante en esos momentos, y un 20% encima era inaceptable e imposible para nosotros...

In those uncertain days, I suppose we got a kick in a butt to solve our (living) situation once for all... We knew that sooner or later, we would have to make a step and move to our own place, but it was always "something" as an excuse to delay it... "Maybe we will earn a bit more and we would be able to buy a home at that place?" Unfortunately, real estate prices were going up much faster than our income, and instead of being closer to the goal, we were further and further away!

En aquellos días de incertidumbre, supongo que nos dieron una patada en el culo para solucionar nuestra situación (de vida) de una vez por todas.... Sabíamos que tarde o temprano tendríamos que dar un paso y mudarnos a nuestra propia casa, pero siempre había «algo» como excusa para retrasarlo... «¿Quizás ganemos un poco más y podríamos comprar una casa en ese lugar?». Por desgracia, los precios de los inmuebles subían mucho más rápido que nuestros ingresos, y en lugar de estar más cerca del objetivo, ¡estábamos cada vez más lejos!

The move to another town/city became inevitable... The area where we lived was too expensive and we have to search for other options... So, we took a day off and hit the road! I know that these two mini-murals say "Isla Tortuga", but no, we didn't go by boat... 😂 Those were just paintings of the shop shutters... 😂

La mudanza a otro pueblo/ciudad se hizo inevitable... La zona donde vivíamos era demasiado cara y teníamos que buscar otras opciones... Así que, ¡nos tomamos un día libre y salimos a la carretera! Ya sé que en estos dos minimurales pone «Isla Tortuga», pero no, no fuimos en barco.... 😂 Eso sólo eran pinturas de las persianas de la tienda... 😂

On that day, we visited 3 places... Two small residential areas/small towns and one city that you can see on these photos... This is Santa Pola, a relatively small coastal town (with over 35K residents) in the Valencian Community in Spain! Of the 3 options that we visited that day, it was the most expensive (understandable as it is on the sea compared to the other two that were inland), but also the most beautiful...

Ese día visitamos 3 lugares... Dos pequeñas zonas residenciales/pequeños pueblos y una ciudad que puedes ver en estas fotos... Se trata de Santa Pola, una ciudad costera relativamente pequeña (con más de 35.000 habitantes) en la Comunidad Valenciana, España. De las 3 opciones que visitamos ese día, era la más cara (comprensible ya que está en el mar comparada con las otras dos que estaban en el interior), pero también la más bonita...

After that visit, we have done our "evaluation" of all options... Pros and cons... Value for money, but also value for time... One of the main parameters was to find a place relatively close to the old one as my wife had to continue to work and the biggest waste of time is the one you lose when you commute... Driving a car, travelling by bus, etc.

Después de esa visita, hemos hecho nuestra «evaluación» de todas las opciones... Pros y contras... Relación calidad-precio, pero también relación calidad-tiempo... Uno de los principales parámetros era encontrar un lugar relativamente cerca del anterior, ya que mi mujer tenía que seguir trabajando y la mayor pérdida de tiempo es la que se pierde al desplazarse... Conducir un coche, viajar en autobús, etc.

Most (coastal) places in Spain have good roads and a good connection with the highroads... I know it sounds silly, but that's probably one of the biggest advantages that Spain has over some other tourist locations that share the same "tourist vision"... Good transportation means that when you come here, you can visit many different places while you are on vacation, and not spend a lot of time in the bus/train/car...

La mayoría de los lugares (costeros) de España tienen buenas carreteras y una buena conexión con las autopistas... Sé que parece una tontería, pero esa es probablemente una de las mayores ventajas que tiene España sobre algunos otros lugares turísticos que comparten la misma «visión turística»... Un buen transporte significa que cuando vienes aquí, puedes visitar muchos lugares diferentes mientras estás de vacaciones, y no pasar mucho tiempo en el autobús/tren/coche...

A similar thing goes when you work outside your place of living... You need to go OUT of the city and go BACK! I know stories of people who live in big cities and they need more time to go to work than someone else who lives in ANOTHER city, coming by train which train stop is close to the work...

Algo parecido ocurre cuando trabajas fuera de tu lugar de residencia... ¡Tienes que SALIR de la ciudad y VOLVER! Conozco historias de personas que viven en grandes ciudades y necesitan más tiempo para ir a trabajar que otra persona que vive en OTRA ciudad, viniendo en tren cuya parada está cerca del trabajo...

I digress... back to Santa Pola... Except for the fact that it was more expensive, the main issue of Santa Pola is the "entrance" to the city... It is relatively far away from the highway and you have only 2 roads to get to the city! There was no solution of building wide roads (as of terrain), and other is only 1 lane on the road... Car crashes happen very often, which leads to closed roads, which leads to getting late to work... There are other cities with similar issues, and the one that comes to my mind is Javea... Another beautiful place, but not (fastly) accessed from the "outside." If you don't need to travel out of the city daily, they are perfect!

Vuelvo a Santa Pola... Excepto por el hecho de que era más caro, el principal problema de Santa Pola es la «entrada» a la ciudad... Está relativamente lejos de la autopista y sólo hay dos carreteras para llegar a la ciudad. No hubo solución de construir carreteras anchas (por la tema de terreno), y otro es sólo 1 carril en la carretera... Los accidentes de coche ocurren muy a menudo, lo que lleva a carreteras cerradas, lo que lleva a llegar tarde al trabajo... Hay otras ciudades con problemas similares, y el que viene a mi mente es Javea ... Otro lugar precioso, pero al que no se accede (rápidamente) desde el «exterior». Si no necesitas desplazarte fuera de la ciudad a diario, ¡son perfectas!

Maybe travelling by one of these would be easier... Not sure... I will have to suggest to my wife that we buy a good motorcycle instead of driving a car... 😃

Tal vez viajar en uno de estos sería más fácil... No estoy seguro... Tendré que sugerirle a mi mujer que nos compremos una buena moto en vez de conducir un coche.... 😃

The city has a weird shape as it looks like everyone wanted to be close to the sea... The old town part is similar to other Spanish cities, but the new part is heavily "distributed" close to the sea and the beach... So, if you go toward the two "ends" of the city, you will realize that there are only 4-5 streets parallel to the coast, and you will find yourself at the outskirts of the city...

La ciudad tiene una forma extraña, ya que parece que todo el mundo quería estar cerca del mar... La parte antigua es similar a otras ciudades españolas, pero la parte nueva está muy «distribuida» cerca del mar y de la playa... Así, si vas hacia los dos «extremos» de la ciudad, te darás cuenta de que sólo hay 4-5 calles paralelas a la costa, y te encontrarás en las afueras de la ciudad...

It has many parks and places to sit, read a book, enjoy the sun... Of course, having multiple beaches in the city is only a bonus! It has a bit of history, as you maybe noticed from the old Castle of Santa Pola from the first 2 photos, but compared to some others, it's not that much preserved... I mean, it's nice, but you will not come to Santa Pola because of the castle, but rather because of the beach and sun! 😎

Tiene muchos parques y lugares donde sentarse, leer un libro, disfrutar del sol... Por supuesto, tener varias playas en la ciudad es sólo una ventaja. Tiene un poco de historia, como tal vez se dio cuenta del antiguo Castillo de Santa Pola de las 2 primeras fotos, pero en comparación con algunos otros, no es que mucho conservado ... Quiero decir, es bonito, pero no vendrás a Santa Pola por el castillo, ¡sino más bien por la playa y el sol! 😎

All in all, compared to some other coastal cities in Spain, I would say that Santa Pola is undervalued (or maybe we can say REAL, as others are overvalued 😃)... As of being a good living place, I wouldn't mind it at all... But, only if our current circumstances and needs change and we don't have to commute daily...

En definitiva, comparada con algunas otras ciudades costeras de España, diría que Santa Pola está infravalorada (o quizás podamos decir REAL, ya que otras están sobrevaloradas 😃).... En cuanto a ser un buen lugar para vivir, no me importaría en absoluto.... Pero, sólo si nuestras circunstancias y necesidades actuales cambian y no tenemos que desplazarnos a diario...
