Believe it or not, the college football season starts tonight. It feels like just the other day we were hanging out watching all the holiday bowl games wishing that we had just a few more weeks of football. If you live outside the US, this is probably more aptly called university football, but here in the US we call it college.
There's actually an interesting distinction between the two if you really wanted to dig into it, but I won't get into all the boring details about that with you. If you want to talk about it in the comments please feel free, but I don't think anyone really reads these posts anyway. Who knows.
The point is, I enjoy writing them, so I can't tell you how excited I am that this time of year has come around again.
Action starts tonight at 5:30 PM with (25) Boise State taking on South Florida.
Oh yeah, if you haven't followed me before with these posts, I only usually cover the top 25 teams in the nation, unless of course my Michigan State Spartans fall outside that top 25, I always cover the Spartans. It might not always be a glowing review on them, but there are no compromises on that.
With only one game in the top 25 tonight, the real action starts tomorrow and more specifically Saturday. It's actually kind of odd that college football is happening on a Thursday night, but I am not complaining about that too much.
Tomorrow night at 7:30 PM (12) Illinois is taking on Western Illinois.
Again, if you are kind of new to this, at the beginning of the season many of the big teams (top 25) typically play pretty weak teams. They are called cupcake games and the smaller universities get paid a lot of money by the bigger universities for their team to get some practice beating up on the smaller team.
In many cases, the money these smaller schools get from these cupcake games is enough to cover their expenses for the whole year.
There are a few outliers though and the biggest one this week comes on Saturday around noon when the defending NCAA champion (3)Ohio State faces the currently ranked number 1 team Texas down in Columbus, OH.
I'm actually going to be in Ohio this weekend, but I have zero intention of going anywhere near campus when the game is taking place. My niece on the other hand is hoping maybe she can get a glimpse of Matthew Mcoungahey on the Texas sideline alright alright alright.
Actually, I totally missed it, but one college game has already happened. (22) Iowa State had a very close upset win over instate school (17) Kansas State 24 to 21.
Don't worry, next week I will give you all the score updates on the top 25 games that took place this weekend. Plus Michigan State who is facing Western Michigan University at 7:00 PM on Friday night.
If I had to give you a handful of games to keep an eye on this weekend. The first would obviously be that Texas/Ohio State game. There is also a (9)LSU versus (4)Clemson game on Saturday night that you might want to check out.
Finally, on Sunday night we get treated to (6) Notre Dame vs. (10) Miami. That doesn't mean there might not be some great upsets in those cupcake games, but we will just have to wait and see.
