Persistence is the right drive and motivation we need if we must succeed; persistence helps us to overcome the different challenges and obstacles life throws at us. We live in a world that's filled with unexpected happenings, so it's very easy for us to get discouraged when things don't seem to work out our way, but when we become persistent, this is what sets us apart from those who give up.
I am reminded of an experience I had with my biostatistics exam during my university days. This course in particular had a bad reputation amongst students for being notoriously difficult; we had many students who struggled to pass on their first attempt. Despite all I had heard about this course, I was so determined to conquer and pass it. When some of my seniors saw me diligently studying, they tried all they could to share discouraging stories of students who had failed multiple times. But I refused to let their words deter me. Instead, I used their negative words as fuel to drive my determination.
The course material was so bulky, boring, and difficult to understand, especially given how much I detest anything that has to do with mathematics. Unfortunately for me, the more I poured myself into studying for this particular exam, the more confused I was. Yet, I remained persistent; there was no room for me to give up; if I put in more effort, I could master the subject.
I met with some of my classmates who I knew understood the course better than I did and sought their help, and I was glad how they graciously explained some of the complex concepts. The outcome was worth all the hard work. I passed the exam with a B grade when the semester results were released. You see, that moment for me was a testament to the power of persistence. This whole thing for me wasn't just about passing my exam; it was more about proving to myself that if I set my mind to do anything, I could actually achieve it with determination and hard work.
What's the difference between persistence and stubbornness?
Yes, there's a difference between them.
Persistence is what drives us to remain focused and motivated, even when the going gets tough. Stubbornness, on the other hand, is when one refuses to change their opinions, actions, or attitude despite knowing that they might be wrong.
