It is true that some people leverage their physical appearance to secure workplace promotions; in my country, Venezuela, there was a time when the Chávez government actually encouraged plastic surgery among public employees, and many women underwent breast augmentation in order to advance in their careers.
Obviously, this took place during the oil boom of the 2000s; nowadays, such a thing would be unthinkable, as one can barely afford to see a general practitioner.
