My Identity Is My Passport To Goodwill

Identity - Do you think you decide your identity, or is it something imposed on you by society? Why? Do you think our skin color, sexuality, appearance, nationality, economic status, religion, etc., influence our identity? Or do you think we forge our identity solely through our daily choices?

Hello #qccommunity, Happy belated May Day. International Workers' Day has been a day of reflection and a countdown of my active years of working, adding value, and impacting lives.

This week’s prompt asks pertinent questions about identity, First, Identity can be defined as what makes us peculiar, what makes us who we are, and differentiates us from others. It may be in the form of our present status, the colour of our skin, the things we do, our social and philosophical status, among other perspectives and distinctions.

Furthermore, identity from birth is determined by the creator, not the society; however, as we grow older and develop, we start experiencing life in different dimensions. At that point, some people will want to start changing their looks and skin colour. This can be attributed to a desire to belong to a particular group or social lifestyle.

For example, people in marketing like bleaching their skin to enable them to get hired quickly, regardless of other desired competencies of the job. They want to impress the recruiters with their looks and skin colour.

Conversely, men want to have the six-pack look to appear attractive before the opposite sex. Apparently, as we grow, society and peer pressure influence our identities. Some will go to the extent of living their life in the opposite direction. Though, it is accepted in some environments, but some other cultures do not accept a man wanting to change his identity to a female, and vice versa.

Additionally, religious differences tend to push individuals to dress and behave in certain ways that control their way of life, all of which affect people's identity and tend to tilt them towards a particular way of living.

In conclusion, I would say that the roles we play in society, our careers, and our way of life affect and change our identity at some point in our lives.
