Where There Is A Will, There Is A Way

Corruption -

Hello #qccommunity. I trust your weekend is going well and as planned; if not, don’t worry too much; tomorrow will pan out better.

The theme for this week talks about corruption, and just as we know, a lot of countries, both developing and civilized ones, are battling with this issue at different levels and forms.

Corruption means favouring a few individuals through the abuse of funds, resources, authority, or power entrusted in a person’s care. This can happen by embezzling funds meant for the execution of projects, bribing to influence decisions, extorting citizens, receiving kickbacks before, during, and after execution of projects, favoritism, and a lot of other acts.

During the recent 2026 World Cup, I read some stories regarding the Argentine Football Association's corruption. This was because I am a follower of VOA sports on X. Though I read it casually, I then had to go back to read more.

From my findings, the courts and police in the US and Argentina are investigating allegations of the diversion of millions of dollars, tax evasion, and embezzlement of funds generated from sports sponsorships and advertising for clubs, directed to a few companies in the United States and Argentina, even before the funds reach the clubs they are meant for.

The impacts of this corruption include the loss of huge sums to the wallets of these companies, leaving clubs without resources to manage their club activities efficiently. Secondly, loss of partnership and trust for the companies projecting the clubs in the international space. Again, there will be issues of competition and hostility among clubs that are not willing to secure funds on their own.

Furthermore, these companies were able to divert funds because of poor internal control, a lack of an independent audit function by the regulatory bodies that are supposed to monitor the accounts and financial resources of the body. It can also be the issue of man know man as seen in some organisations. The issue of a poor oversight and accountability by individuals meant to put systems and structures to check and balance accounts as at when due.

Corruption can happen in any country, government, or organisation with weak accounting regulations and internal control. My country has had its own taste of corruption in diverse ways, but just as it is said, where there is a will, there is a way.

If people are not held accountable for their wrongs, these things will continue to thrive, but once there are laws, rules, and ways to mitigate or punish offenders, they will be reduced or stopped. Thank you for coming around.
