Incompetence -
Hello #qccommunity friends, I trust your day is going well. Welcome to my blog. Incompetence means when an individual lacks the required skills to execute their responsibilities. However, weaponized or strategic incompetence works in different ways.

Employees Servicing A Machine
First scenario: an employee has the required skills to perform a job role or responsibility but feigns incompetence in order to avoid doing the job. Some reasons why this may happen is either because the income or reward that comes after doing the job is not attractive, or the person wants to avoid that responsibility.
The second scenario is where an employee genuinely lacks the needed skills to execute the job role. So instead of disgracing themselves in the role, the person genuinely declines to carry out such responsibility. At that point, the individual can be put on an improvement plan to assist the individual in gaining the competencies required to carry out jobs in the near future and close the skill gap.
I have worked with an employee who was highly competent in different job roles such as graphic design, pre-press, and post -press printing. The individual also has knowledge of operating several machines. I found out during the assessment. When the individual joined us, the business was overusing these competencies without adequate reward or matched incentives.
All of a sudden, the employee changed and started feigning incompetence anytime his attention was needed for machine troubleshooting. This issue continued until it got to my table. When he was contacted for a one to one discussion, he confirmed his reason for feigning incompetence was to strategically shy away from carrying out multiple tasks without being properly rewarded. I escalated this to the necessary quarters, adding my suggestions.
The employee’s package was reviewed, and work resumed properly with his continuous attention to all the machines he has knowledge of. Ultimately, the employee strategically weaponised incompetence and achieved his goal of receiving a reviewed package.

On the other hand, when incompetence is feigned to forestall, exploit, or block opportunities, whether in the organisation, church, or family, it should be punished to deter others. Again, policies forestalling such antecedents should be set up in organisations or families.
Finally, incompetence can be positively weaponised to genuinely achieve set goals, while it becomes negative and punishable when it is done negatively to witch-hunt, exploit, or put others in harm’s way.
