Genesis Ranked Play & Team Upgrade!

Hello Soccer Fans!

We have all been waiting for developments in the Genesis League Goals game that is quite behind schedule and finally we are able to play ranked games! With this news, I thought it would be worth to take a look at the game again and see how far it has come since I last looked when they released the first look at actual matches.

Ranked games are important as it allows you to earn by playing the game, so this is an important start and milestone for the Genesis crew. Since the staking rewards have finished, there are also still no liquidity pools or staking rewards for holding GLX tokens, so I hope that the team start to move faster in this area. As they are spin off from Splinterlands, getting the tokenomics right is something you would hope they can get right here.

There is now a new button on the main page called Compete and once you press it, you get a nostalgic loading screen.

Once in, your game starts playing and it is an improvement over the beta gameplay we have seen before. The graphics look more appealing and the timer is less intruding. There are still some interactive elements where you can press a green button to pass or strike. This is given with a % success rate, which I would presume you mostly want the highest percentage, so not sure of the usefulness of it tbh!

I didn't make any changes since I originally setup my team and got 3 spankings in a row which wasn't much fun. I also didn't see that I made any earnings for my time which is also bad! Therefore, I think it would be good to make some changes to my team, but what changes should I make?

Of course, there are no helpful information to getting started in the game anywhere, no useful popups explaining the scores, abilities, what is useful to know or anything like that, you need to intuitively know this off by heart.

I am sure onboarding new players will be a breeze in this case.

Viewing my team, I can see some stats, but what they all mean and how that effects anything and what benefits I guess we need to figure out ourselves. Off the top of my head, I am not sure what IN, BL or TA means. There is clearly still alot of work to be done in the game.

I decided to make some upgrades to my team to help me win some matches. My first signing was Carles Gil. I have been abit bad and not watched any MLS this year except the odd bit of Inter Miami so don't know the players too well. When searching, I am trying to see if they have a moustache or a cool hair doo will get them into my squad.

This was not so easy as you might think as I needed to restart my browser a few times as either some issue with the game or keychain as keychain showed success, but in game was failing.

With my upgraded team ready, after many browser restarts, I was ready to try and win some games and hopefully some GLX tokens! I have spent around $10 to try and get a better team and hope that it might pay off!

I have 11 packs staked which I today unstaked and need to wait a week for them to be available. So maybe I get some more useful additions to my deck then too.

Sadly I was still unable to win a match and even got an 8-0 spanking, probably as my team morale hit the floor.

Which gave me a 0% chance of success on the pitch?

After 9 matches, I had 8 losses and 1 draw against Technical Support. Whether that is the real Tech Support for the game, I am not sure.

Summary

Overall, it is great there is now ranked play, but it seems very hard to win games. This makes sense as anybody fielding a team is going to be quite dedicated and perserverant to figure out the game and its nuisances which most people would quickly give up on, especially with the limited gameplay that is currently on offer.

The game is not like real football management at all and of course is not like a football arcade game. I would probably describe it as a sort of stats based interactive clicking game where you can collect some cool NFTs. The clicking part is quite ok to do, but I can imagine it might get boring for the 100th time. I wonder how it might be kept more fresh in the future?

There are still some bugs to be ironed out and also lots of things need to be improved to help new players get started. There are no leagues right now, but I imagine that is coming which I think will add to the fun some more.

When it comes to web3 games though, it seems the biggest thing going for it is the card collection aspect and the link to MLS, as the gameplay is not so exciting when I look at some of the top web3 games launching now.
