Loris Karius stars as Schalke ends Bayern's 67-match unbeaten streak with a stunning 0-0 draw at Veltins Arena.

One of the biggest shocks of the season so far came in the Bundesliga as promoted side Schalke 04 held reigning champions Bayern Munich to a goalless draw at Veltins Arena, ending an extraordinary 67-consecutive-matchday reign at the top of the table.

The Data Speak for Themselves

Bayern were dominant on paper: 74% possession, 15 shots to Schalke's 2 and 1.9 expected goals. But none of that mattered against a Schalke side that simply refused to break. It was Bayern’s first goalless competitive match since losing to PSG at the Club World Cup in July 2025, and their first in the Bundesliga since February 2025.

Redemption Arc for Karius

The story of the match was Loris Karius, once written off during a difficult spell at Liverpool, who delivered arguably the performance of his career. Five crucial saves – including a stunning stop against Nathaniel Brown and a foot save against Michael Olise – kept Bayern at bay throughout. It was fitting that Karius won 68% of the Man of the Match vote and even won the praise of fellow German international Manuel Neuer, who described his saves as “really big” and fully deserving of the award.

The End of an Era, For Now

Schalke last beat Bayern in 2011 and had failed to take even a point off them for nine years - a run of 12 straight defeats. Ending that jinx, especially with Bayern resting key men Harry Kane and Michael Olise, would be one of the biggest shocks of the season.

Bayern's Response

The Clarets are not panicking despite dropping points. "Now we immediately go to the Champions League next week and then we have a difficult trip to newly promoted Elversberg," said Neuer summing up the mood after the match.

What's Next

Bayern remain heavy favorites to win the title, but this result shows that the Bundesliga's new boys will not be pushovers this season. For Schalke, it’s a sign that their long-awaited return to the top flight may yet have more surprises.
