I got so frustrated last night I turned the game off. Of course I ended up following the feed in my bed on my phone for another half hour or so, but man, what a crappy game! I'll get to that in just a second though. First, let's go back and take a look at the scores from the past week.
When we left off, we were heading into Wednesday night when there were five games in the top 25. None of them were upsets, so we are going to move right along to Friday night when there were two games in the top 25. Sadly, neither of those games were upsets either. It would have been nice to see Ohio State get a surprise win over number 3 Michigan, but U of M beat them 74 to 62.
Saturday was probably the biggest day for college hoops as we had 19 games in the top 25. Number 10 Michigan State had a really nice win over Maryland 91 to 48. It was practically text book with tons of dunks on the MSU side and some amazing defense. In fact, my wife stopped watching part way through the game because she decided it wasn't really even a contest.
I watched the whole thing of course and I was happy with the Spartans win!
Number 15 Vanderbilt rebounded after some tough losses earlier in the week beating Mississippi State 88 to 56. Meanwhile, number 22 North Carolina upset number 14 Virginia 85 to 80. Villanova took number 2 Connecticut to overtime, but ended up falling short 75 to 67.
Texas took down number 21 Georgia 87 to 67, and number 12 Texas Tech had a huge upset over number 6 Houston 90 to 86. In the Big Ten, we saw number 11 Illinois head into number 4 Purdue and come away with a massive upset 88 to 82.
Auburn didn't want to be left out and they took down number 16 Florida 76 to 67. Finally, in the SEC Tennessee had a huge upset victory over number 17 Alabama 79 to 73.
With no games on Sunday, that leads us into Monday night where there were two games in the top 25. Both of them were games between ranked teams, but neither of them were upsets.
Finally, that rolls us into last night. Ugh. Michigan State had an absolutely horrible showing against Rutgers racking up a massive 15 turnovers. It was oddly reminiscent of their game against Nebraska. Thankfully, they were able to force overtime and came away with the win 88 to 79. At least for now the Spartans get to retain their number 10 ranking.
Notre Dame took number 17 Virginia into two overtimes, but ultimately fell short losing 100 to 97. Meanwhile, the big match up between number 5 Nebraska and number 3 Michigan was a little bit of a let down. Nebraska actually dominated most of the game and I thought for a bit they were actually going to win. It was kind of sad to look at the score this morning and seeing that Michigan had edged them out 75 to 72. That is the first loss for Nebraska, but honestly, they shouldn't drop too far in the polls. If Michigan only went from 2 to 3 after losing to unranked Wisconsin, Nebraska shouldn't fall much past 6 or 7.
Finally, in another Big Ten upset, Indiana had a huge home win against number 12 Purdue 72 to 67. This is a rough slide for a Boilermakers team that was sitting in the top five in preseason rankings.
Check back next week with all the updates from the college hoops world!
