While those two teams from Michigan have been on a bit of a West Coast road trip, there have been a lot of other things going on in the college basketball world as well. With the football season finally being wrapped up, I will likely be spending more time talking about college basketball. At least until the Olympic games start up in a just a couple of weeks.
I'm actually going to be out of town when the opening ceremony starts, so I might have to go back and watch it via DVR.
Anyway, last Wednesday we had twelve games in the top 25. Mississippi had a nice overtime upset win over number 21 Georgia 97 to 95. Likewise, Stanford took down men's basketball powerhouse number 14 North Carolina 95 to 90. Texas didn't want to be left out either, so they came away with a nice 88 to 64 win over number 10 Vanderbilt.
Thursday there was only one game in the top 25 and it was a blowout win by number 9 Gonzaga over Washington State.
With no top 25 games on Friday, things picked back up on Saturday with a massive twenty games. Number 3 Connecticut had a narrow win over Georgetown 64 to 62. Butler started the upset train with a 77 to 66 win over number 25 Seton Hall, then Kentucky followed it up with a 80 to 78 upset over number 24 Tennessee.
Number 18 Alabama narrowly took down Oklahoma 83 to 81, and Cincinnati handed number 2 Iowa State their second upset in the same week 79 to 70.
Number 19 Florida continued to roll along this season with a 98 to 94 upset over number 10 Vanderbilt. Meanwhile, Grand Canyon embarrassed number 23 Utah 84 to 74 and California had the upset over number 14 North Carolina 84 to 74. Needless to say, Saturday was a bit of a rough day for ranked teams.
Number 21 Georgia stomped number 17 Arkansas 90 to 76, and number 8 Nebraska continued their impressive season with a 77 to 58 win over Northwestern. That puts Nebraska at 18-0 on the season as of last Saturday. Pretty impressive. Congrats @gooddream if you are still cheering for the Cornhuskers!
Finally, number 12 Michigan State has a nice win over Washington 80 to 63, and number 15 Texas Tech got the upset over number 11 BYU 84 to 71. I watched the Michigan State game and it was a really nice showing by the Spartans.
Sunday there was just one game in the top 25 and it was a blow out win by number 7 Houston over Arizona State 103 to 73... Ouch!
No top 25 basketball on Monday, but last night we had Kent State take number 25 Miami of Ohio into over time. Miami of Ohio came away with the 107 to 101 victory. North Carolina State got a nice upset over number 18 Clemson 80 to 76 in overtime, and my favorite number 10 Michigan State took down Oregon 68 to 52. I didn't stay up to watch that game since it happened at 9 PM EST.
Number 20 Arkansas added to number 15 Vanderbilt's woes upsetting them 93 to 68, and UCLA came out of nowhere to stun number 4 Purdue 69 to 67.
Finally, I'm a bit annoyed that Michigan is still ranked number 3 despite their loss to unranked Wisconsin. They clearly should have fallen further than one position after a loss like that. Any other team in the Big Ten probably would. You think Purdue is only going to be number 5 next week?
