I spent a bit of time watching some college basketball this past weekend and when the graphic you see on the screen above came on, I actually had to rewind the feed to get a photo of it. If you have ever questioned just how rigged sports rankings are, this should be the perfect example for you. Now, I know what you are going to say. I know what they are going to say. They are going to throw out some trash about strength of schedule and try to make you believe that Nebraska is an inferior team because of who they have played.
The truth is, we saw something like this play out with BYU on the football side of things just this year. They were rolling right along with a perfect record until they came up against Texas Tech and then things fell apart. They were perpetually ranked lower than many felt they should be simply because of the teams they had played up to that point that year.
While part of me doesn't disagree with that, I don't think that is the case with Nebraska and I think it is just ridiculous that on a national level Michigan is ranked 3 and Nebraska is ranked 7 despite the Cornhuskers being undefeated. Actually, I should adjust that. The new rankings came out yesterday and while Michigan is still number 3, Michigan State has moved into the number 7 spot and Nebraska now finds themselves in the number 5 spot. Which is a little better, but I still think it's kind of a disgrace.
The fact that Michigan only fell one spot when they lost against unranked Wisconsin from number 2 to number 3 is a mockery of the whole process. Absolute trash!
I guess things will be put to rest tonight when Nebraska faces Michigan for the first (and only I think) time this season. They play at 7 PM tonight in Michigan, so I guess I wouldn't be surprised if the Wolverines take the win. U of M has a really good team this year. In fact, I am not looking forward to the games against Michigan State. I think it is going to be a tough stretch for my Spartans to take down Michigan.
Despite that, I still think the rankings are wrong and they should really do something to make things a bit more clear. Even Iowa State who took two big loses a week or two ago is still sitting in the number 8 spot in the rankings. That just seems a bit crazy to me.
All that being said, I can't really say I am surprised by the teams that are currently in the top 25. I would say about 80 percent of them are the teams you would expect to see up in the top ranks of the college basketball world.
Probably the only outlier right now is Saint Louis at number 21, Miami of Ohio at number 24, and Nebraska as we talked about before. It's kind of an out of nowhere thing that they are even ranked at all this season. Though well deserved.
