We are now just a couple of college basketball games away from being fully immersed in conference play. Actually, conference play has already started by all accounts, but there are still a few throw away cupcake games here and there that need to get out of the way. Probably the most specific one for me would be the Michigan State/Oakland game that is being played at Little Caesars Arena this coming weekend I believe.
This is an annual game where the Spartans take on the Golden Grizzlies, and although it should be an easy game for the Big Ten school, more often than not it ends up being a challenge for them. I hope that isn't the case this year.
We had three games in the top 25 last Wednesday and none of them were upsets. Number 23 Nebraska had a solid 90 to 60 win over Wisconsin, and number 6 Purdue easily handled Minnesota 85 to 57 in Big Ten play.
Thursday there was only one top 25 game in the league, and that saw Iowa falling to number 4 Iowa State 66 to 62.
Likewise on Friday there was only one game in the top 25. Number 5 UConn took down Texas 71 to 63 in Connecticut.
Saturday was the money day. With college football winding down, we are going to start seeing more and more basketball days like this on the weekend. There were sixteen games in the top 25 on Saturday. Number 17 Arkansas upset number 16 Texas Tech 93 to 86. It was also nice to see number 9 Michigan State extend their record in the Big Ten beating Penn State 76 to 72. That was actually not as close of a game as you might think. Michigan State was dominating most of it, but they slacked off at spots and that allowed Penn State to stay in it.
Annoying to say the least.
Number 23 Nebraska had a nice upset victory over number 13 Illinois 83 to 80, but that was the last of the two upsets on Saturday. Everything else went pretty much the way you might expect. I should point out that Maryland played a hard game leading Michigan for a good portion of the game, but in the stretch the Wolverines came out on top beating Maryland 101 to 83.
On Sunday there was only one game in the top 25, but there was no upset to be found.
Zero games in the top 25 on Monday, but eleven of them last night.
Number 9 Michigan State had a nice 92 to 69 win over Toledo, and number 20 Tennessee had a big upset win over 11 Louisville 83 to 62. All the other games were pretty much cupcake games that I won't recap for you here. The team in a power conference scored a lot of points against the team not in a power conference. You know the drill...
Check back next week when I bring you a recap of the college games from the past week!
