First off, I just want to offer a congratulations to the amazing US women's ice hockey team after their exciting overtime win against Canada yesterday in the gold medal game. I was watching the game at work, then it went into overtime and I had to leave. @mrsbozz had the game on my phone while I was driving and we were streaming the sound through the audio of her car. I about drove off the road I was cheering so much when the winning goal went in the net. I actually think I might have scared my wife a little bit because I let out such a loud passionate scream. It was actually pretty moving watching them celebrate after the fact. I found myself getting a little choked up, but I tried to hide it from @mrsbozz as much as possible. She would have made fun of me.
Also a big congrats to Alyssa Liu who won the gold medal in the women's figure skating. We got the chance to see a few of her performances and she was absolutely phenomenal. She also kind of goes against the trend of what you would expect from the traditional figure skater, so that is kind of cool too. She might be just about as close to a goth figure skater as we ever get...
With American football being all done and the olympic games almost over, we have to turn our sights fully on basketball and softball. It's actually a good time to get excited about basketball as the NCAA tournament is just around the corner. I should also point out that the World Baseball Classic is starting in a month or two as well. I'm pretty excited about that.
Let's get caught up with the basketball scores from this week though. Monday we had two games in the top 25 and one of them was an upset with number 6 Iowa State taking down number 2 Houston 70 to 67.
Tuesday there were ten games in the top 25. Number 1 Michigan handled number 7 Purdue pretty easily beating them by 11 points. N.C. State had a nice upset over number 16 North Carolina 82 to 58. It wasn't even close! What a blowout!
SMU also had a nice upset win over number 21 Louisville 95 to 85, and Rhode Island took down number 18 Saint Louis 81 to 76.
Also in the Big Ten, Ohio State handed number 24 Wisconsin a tough lost 86 to 69. It's just too bad Michigan State couldn't have faced that Wisconsin team when they played. It was clearly an off night for a Badgers team that has been handling ranked opponents pretty easily this season. Thankfully, number 15 Michigan State didn't add to the upset woes and they easily beat UCLA 82 to 59. However, in another stunner, Iowa had a huge win over number 9 Nebraska 57 to 52 in a game that could spell doom for Nebraska's hopes of a Big Ten regular season championship.
Finally, Arizona State gave us the final upset of the day with a 72 to 67 win over number 13 Texas Tech. Tuesday was a rough day for ranked teams.
Wednesday gave us nine more games in the top 25. Number 25 Alabama had a thrilling 117 to 115 upset over number 20 Arkansas in a game that went into two overtimes. Creighton heated things up in the Big East with a 91 to 84 upset over number 5 Connecticut. Missouri also scored a nice upset over number 19 Vanderbilt 81 to 80.
There were no games last night, so now we just have the weekend to look forward to. Michigan State faces Ohio State on Sunday at 1 PM, so you can guess what I will be doing at that time!
Canada SUCKS!!
