Hive Income Tokens: A Quick Comparison

I've always looked out for those Hive Engine tokens that pay a regular dividend in #HIVE tokens. It seems like a common sense way to passively increase my holdings over time while investing in community projects. But not all tokens are equal, and it's worth investigating...

EDIT: The math was off! It's all relative and nothing really changes, but I forgot to convert the HIVE to USD before I divided the stack value. It should be good now. My apologies.

I won't go down too deep. And I can only look at the tokens which made it on to my radar... there could be others, and I would love to hear about them in the comments. Please do let me know.

We should cover a few easy ground rules: these are Hive income tokens, but I do have one on this list which distributes SWAP.HIVE-- basically the same thing... and I would also consider a token that pays an HBD dividend, although I haven't found one.

And the main idea here is obviously to compare these income #tokens, so it only makes sense to have a few basic metrics to apply in each case. Then it should be apparent whether there are any clear winners and losers.

So How Do We Compare Income Tokens?

I'll be using three different criteria:

  1. THE INCOME... No-brainer, right? I take the annual income I would make based on the most recent dividend, and I divide it by the value of my current token stack. Easy math.

  2. PRICE PERFORMANCE... I try to give a relative scale for how volatile the token's price has been over the last quarter, as well as the token's relative value performance. Is it up or down, or has it remained somewhat stable over the last three months?

  3. AND LIQUIDITY... Sometimes overlooked, there can be wide gaps between the buy and sell prices of tokens... or no buyers at all if you ever want to exit the investment. That is what is called "low liquidity", and something to consider avoiding.

I hope this is straightforward enough to make it digestible, but also robust enough that we have some varying and interesting results to consider.

So let's get into it!

The List of Hive Income Tokens...

The ones I know about are also all in my wallet, which is how I can make the necessary dividend calculations. They are EDSI, INCOME, DAB, BRO, LGN, SPI and BBH.

I'll mention right away that I would've included the DRIP token until recently, when it suspended its HIVE dividend. The project will be focusing only on Splinterlands now, and it has already begun distributing only SPS and DRIP tokens.

I'm not saying that it's a bad investment now... there are plenty of projects worth looking at! But we're talking about Hive income tokens only, so DRIP went and jumped off this particular list.

1- DAB, or Daily Dab

Yes, number one does mean the winner. Do your own analysis though... this is not investment advice, and I am not a financial professional. Just making productive conversation.

DAB takes the gold because it checks all three boxes nicely: the HIVE income is roughly 36% annually, its chart performance has been less volatile than others and the DAB price has been somewhat stable-- but I think it could be a future gainer. And it has fairly high liquidity, so selling would be quick and painless.

I've included one chart screenshot below for the #DAB token to illustrate what I mean by lower volatility and high liquidity, but you can check the others out if you're curious.

DAB Token Volatility and Liquidity.PNG

The @dailydab project is one of the newest projects on the list, but I've been on board for a little while. Please note that the HIVE dividends are only paid on liquid DAB tokens... staked DAB will earn staked DBOND, the sister token that will in turn mine you more DAB tokens.

Pretty cool. And it takes the crown for now!

2- EDSI, or Eddie Earner Income

This runner-up slot was a close one... but the EDSI token from @eddie-earner has to take it, in my opinion, thanks to its high income and relatively stable price performance.

EDSI is earning me around 16% annually in Hive income, a clear second best. Its chart performance is a little volatile, but nothing too jarring... and it has increased in value over the past quarter. The liquidity could be a bit tighter, but there seems to be lots of supply and demand. I'll take it... and the Eddie Earner Income token will take the silver medal this time around!

3- LGN, or Legion

This token was in the running for second place, but its price performance has lagged.

It has the third highest HIVE income distribution anyway, at around 14% annually. It has also been a bit more volatile than EDSI, and it has lost more of its value over the same time period. But LGN tokens have decent liquidity, as I said, which is why third place seems fitting.

The LGN token, issued by @wearelegion, is part of the #BRO economy... another token on this list. These folks seem to have the right idea if they're looking to get my invaluable attention! I'm half-kidding, of course, but the income approach is a very smart one.

4- BBH, or Bitcoin Backed Hive

This is two posts in a row in which I'm talking about the #BBH token... so you know it must be good! And it's the only token on this list that distributes SWAP.HIVE, as I mentioned.

But it deserves to be in the fourth spot! My BBH holdings are paying me around 10% annually, and its price performance has been relatively stable... although it has decreased a bit in value in the past few months. Its liquidity is pretty high too, so there isn't much to complain about.

Hive Income Tokens- BBH EDSI LGN DAB.png
Created using my own likeness, Bitmoji and Canva Pro.

The @thebbhproject initiative by @bradleyarrow distributes a few different tokens-- ALIVE, CTP and LEO as well-- depending on the number of BBH tokens you hold. The return calculated above is ONLY the SWAP.HIVE portion, so there is more upside.

5/6- BRO, or Brocoin

I went back and forth, but this is the one spot that I honestly can't settle on. The BRO token, issued by @raymondspeaks as a @brofi community token, has a long proven track-record of consistency and popularity... and BRO gets the liquidity checkmark too, so I do want to give it a few bonus points.

The HIVE income, however, is much lower than the #INCOME token below. It sits around 4% based on my current stack and the most recent dividend. And the BRO price hasn't had a great quarter. I still just feel like this particular token is more of a good value play right now... instead of something I may lose faith in.

Again: not investment advice. I could be wrong about any or all of this. πŸ™„

5/6- INCOME, or Income Miner

This really was a close one! A much better return than BRO, but some volatility as well, and its lower liquidity helped to clinch the tie. I want to say that this income token-- c/o @ecoinstats-- is one of the older projects on this list, so props are in order. It counts for something!

The HIVE income really is not bad at all: around 9% as I write this. And although it has actually gained some value this past quarter, the INCOME price swings are more aggressive and it just feels more volatile than BRO's chart. Its supply and demand aren't bad, but the liquidity gap is wider than I would like.

7- SPI, or the SPinvest Token

I hate to blatantly label a project "the worst of the bunch", but I'll remind you that I do own a small stack of SPI tokens and I admire the consistency and creativity that I've seen from the @spinvest project. There are no losers here...

Except the DRIP token maybe.

Again: I'm kidding! 😜
I still own all of these coins. Calm down.

Having sufficiently softened the blow, here are the SPI metrics: the current HIVE dividend is around 2.5% annually, the price movement is a bit volatile too with a downward slant overall... and SPI has the largest liquidity gap, which makes it much tougher to pull the trigger either way.

In Conclusion...

Holy Shit. I Talk Too Much! That's my conclusion.

Hive Income Token Conclusion- DAB EDSI BRO LGN.png

Pardon me. That's not untrue, but the real conclusion here is that NOT ALL TOKENS ARE EQUAL... that was my original premise, I think. There are clear winners and losers when you have specific criteria to differentiate between them.

But perhaps the real beauty of this list is that each and every one of these #Hive-Engine tokens have automatic value with the Hive income they produce. I do suggest that you consider any and all dividend tokens as a solid foundation for growth... but do just a little bit of homework. I hope this helps in your search for future winners.

Last time: not a financial professional. Grain of salt.
I'm almost done talking now. I promise.

But first... here are my alterior affiliate plugs-- two per post, that's my firm rule-- and they really are two of my favorites. So check 'em out... or else!

(Totally kidding. I'm a smart-ass. You know this. 😏)

FREEBITCOIN is my Bitcoin savings account, honestly... but it's also an hourly BTC faucet and so much more! There are constant rewards and lotteries too, one of which is for a LAMBORGINI-- or $200,000 worth of Bitcoin. I use this website mainly to gather small amounts of BTC while I earn decent interest on my balance. If you sign up using my link above, I give 40% of everything I earn from referral activity right back to you! So what are you waiting for?

HONEYGAIN is your way to capitalize on the bandwidth and data that you don't use! Just connect your PC, cell phone and any other applicable device... then HoneyGain will pay you for what it uses. Once you reach $20, cash out to Paypal-- or earn faster by switching to JumpTask token. I use the Paypal option, and I've been earning with HoneyGain for a while. Totally legit... check it out!

Did you read that whole post? If so, you are an absolute rock star! I really do appreciate your time. If I've missed any Hive (or SWAP.HIVE or HBD) income tokens, please do chime in... I can even do a follow-up post if necessary. This is my second post in a week, and I intend to keep it going. Woot! πŸ’ͺ Peace out for now... I hope everyone's having a good week.

The original SPI fund value was hard-capped at 100,000 tokens sold at .13 USD (1 HIVE each) approximately six years ago (7,000 SPI have been burned since). I know you were looking at income, but that isn't really a fair comparison for SPI which is an investment and growth token. The dividend or income is a bonus. An earnings and holdings report is usually published on a Sunday under the @spinvest account. In the last report, each SPI had a value of 5.01 HIVE and 2.61 USD.

With regard to liquidity: uniquely, as far as I am aware, SPI has a 95% buyback guarantee. Holders simply need to apply to @spinvest saying they want to use the buyback guarantee and how many SPI they want to sell. The buyback is accomplished within a matter of days and has managed buybacks for over 11,000 SPI at a time without a problem. (I also have a buy wall available on Hive-Engine for anyone who wants to sell SPI).

SPIs are re-circulated through a subscription savings plan managed by the Saturday Savers Club over on the @eddie-earner account, the home of EDSI, SPI's savings and income token. The subscription savings plan takes advantage of the recurring payments feature to automate payments over forty weeks, spreading the cost of purchasing SPI so that even the smallest accounts can enter the fund at 1.5 HIVE or less a week. The next SPI subscription plan will launch mid-March and open at the beginning of April. Details will be available on the @eddie-earner account.

Well, that certainly adds some context, and a few reasons to move SPI up on my list! I obviously could've done some more digging... my apologies for the misrepresentation. Even the quick comparison I put together took some time, so it's always challenging to peel back extra layers. I'll post a follow-up with a better assessment and hopefully a few new additions.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to reach out. I really do appreciate it. πŸ™

Nice post we only have less than 69k in circulation now ever with the odd burn we are deflationary and with our vote support for holders and regular buy backs in place we do our best. However we do hold your top 5 tokens with Daily Dabs being owned half by bro and half by SSUK! We also hold BXT which is a good regular div token worth checking out.

0.00041868 BEE

I'm sorry for not seeing this comment earlier!
I'm in on BXT too, as both a staker and liquidity provider... but I wasn't sure where the HIVE was coming from. I assumed the HIVE dividends were for providing liquidity to the pools, and the BXT was from staking. So I'm still not sure if it should be a part of this list as a pure income token.

No it is the other way round for BXT, you definitely get Hive for staking!

It's my pleasure! And I have to thank you for taking the time to read my post, and for engaging. It's not as common as I would like, although this post has sparked a bit of conversation. πŸ™

I was actually off on the DAB return too, I should mention... it's actually around 36%. I mentioned in the post that the HIVE dividend only pays out on liquid DAB token holdings, but I forgot to subtract the value of my staked DAB before calculating the return. (So much to remember. !LOL) I'm doing the edit right now.

Thanks again. I'm so glad it helps. :)

Sorry, I donΒ΄t agree with your assessment at all. SPI on last place? Honestly?

0.00029881 BEE

I respect your opinion, but someone had to take the spot.

Did you read the whole post? I tried to be fair and kind... I still like and hold SPI, but its 2.5% return and low liquidity were the main reasons for my decision. It's nothing personal.

Thank you very much for commenting though, @stayoutoftherz... I appreciate any type of engagement! πŸ™

Annual return is worthless if the token drops in price over time, as many of those investment tokens do. You have to consider price development over time as well.

0E-8 BEE

No YOLO token?
Also I would consider time to unstake. BBH, BRO, EDS among others don't need to be staked so it adds to it's liquidity imo.
!BBH

This little contest was only for HIVE income tokens, so YOLO doesn't make the cut. It sounds cool though! 😎

That's a great point too, @logen9f! I never thought of unstaking as a piece of the liquidity equation. I'm hoping there are more tokens to find so I can do a follow-up.

Thanks so much for your input! πŸ™
