Who Truly Is a Good Person?

I came across this week’s Sci-Fi community prompt titled “Who is a good person?” and I was compelled to make an entry because it’s a question I’ve been thinking about for the past few months.

If you ask me, I'll tell you I haven’t fully figured out who a good person is or should be. However, I’m certain that I know some qualities that make or hinder one.

For starters, I’d like to say that goodness, just like every other quality, cannot be hidden. If someone is genuinely good, people will naturally have the urge to sing their praises even in their absence. They will have individuals who defend them in the face of injustice and others who vouch for their character without thinking twice.

I know a lot of persons say we experience people differently, and while that is true, I do not believe that it applies here. If someone is truly good, at least 80% of the people who have come across them should be able to describe them as such. That is one metric I often use because 80 out of 100 people calling man D a terrible person cannot all be wrong. And that brings me to my description of a good person.

Who truly is a good person?

Well, a good person is somebody who respects your harmless wishes and decisions without making a big deal out of them. It’s someone who takes your no for no without trying to coerce you into saying otherwise. It’s someone who sees how uncomfortable you are about a situation or favour being asked of you and, instead of being persuasive, takes a step back. Such a person doesn’t make you feel bad for having boundaries.

A good person is also someone who, even when their desires with you are not met, continues to support you if and when they can. They prove that their kindness isn’t dependent on what you can offer them. They are kind to you and equally kind to the next person solely because they believe goodness shouldn’t depend on familiarity.

They consider your feelings before saying damaging words, especially when those words are untrue. They know how badly you would feel if they took a certain action, so they refrain from doing it. They ensure that they’re not the source of your pain. They commit to making you happy and easing your anxieties.

A good person gives out of the goodness of their heart, not because of what they stand to gain from exploiting your naivety. They aren’t loud about their charitable actions just to gain validation. They respect others regardless of social status and don’t create trouble where there is none.

Ultimately, they stand for the truth and bear no false witness. They don’t put people’s lives in jeopardy. They don’t engage in illegal work to make a living, neither do they cover up the wickedness of their friends or family members.

I'll admit that being a good person is difficult, and finding one is just as hard. But we can still strive to become better people who will not only find fulfilment in our own actions but also contribute to making the world a better place.
